10 Best On-Screen Cat Companions

Cats have a bright presence in films and their inclusion can elevate the story. Here are the ten best on-screen cat companions in cinema.

Cats are everywhere. Much like dogs, these household pets become popular staples in pop culture. And of course, they are dominant in movies. Whether they are live-action or animated, Hollywood loves cats that they have been featured as the closest companions that feel most at home in their owner’s homes or on their arms.

The cats on this list will surely delight anyone’s heartstrings for their simple joys as a cat. But to be eligible, they need to have owners or could be cohabiting with several people at some point. With that, here are the 10 best on-screen cat companions.

10 DC (That Darn Cat)

“Darn” or “DC” is a mischievous Siamese cat who likes to wander around and cause mayhem everywhere he goes. He frequents in the house of sisters Inky and Patty. But at an opportune moment, a bank teller at hostage sends an SOS note on her watch and replaces it with DC’s collar. Hijinks ensue when FBI agent Zeke Kelso (Dean Jones) is assigned in the case.

DC succeeds on being a fun and playful cat who wittily escapes every situation he stumbles upon. Thus, this troublemaker is a good lifesaver.

9 Jinx (Meet The Parents)

Mr. Jinx, a Himalayan breed, is the Byrnes family cat. Jack (Robert De Niro) taught this fellow how to respond when called, wave its paw and, most memorable, use the toilet. And the Byrnes’ close-knit relationship with the cat is highlighted when Greg (Ben Stiller) goes to full lengths to find him and get him back to the house.

Like DC, Jinx is a mischievous cat who loves to play around for the attention of the humans around him. And it is impressive how he was trained to do tricks.

8 Figaro (Pinocchio)

Disney featured a lot of iconic cats. But Figaro is one of those animal companions who acts more like a child than a pet. This pet cat of Mister Geppetto and Pinocchio is easily pampered and responsive to his owners. However, he also acts needy and stubborn when giving commands he does not like. In Pinocchio, he has a love-hate relationship with the goldfish Cleo.

Figaro is a lovable presence that one loves hanging around. And his childlike attitude makes him a wonderful playmate, especially with Pluto in several shorts.

7 Goose (Captain Marvel)

The recent feline companion, Goose is an orange tabby who stumbles upon the jet that Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) used to escape the Air Force base. While seemingly innocent, she later reveals to be a Flerken alien in disguise and unleashes her true form to overcome the Kree.

Named after Goose from Top Gun, this fun cat steals the show by simply providing a breezy presence from the action. No wonder Fury loves petting this cat that she was responsible for his signature quirk.

6 Cat (Breakfast At Tiffany’s)

Speaking of tabbies, the cat from Breakfast at Tiffany’s is an occasional scene-stealer. The “poor slob without a name” companion to Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn), this cat hangs around her apartment, though Holly revealed that she does not own the cat. But that did not stop it from coming back to Holly.

Even with it being unnamed, this orange tabby made a solid impression to make Holly realize about her lifestyle. And given that this cat is played by animal actor Orangey, it made a remarkable impression and comfy presence.

5 Ulysses (Inside Llewyn Davis)

More tabbies to come. This time, it is from a Coen brothers film, one of the last places where one can find pets being featured. Inside Llewyn Davis explores the week in a life of a folk singer (Oscar Isaac) who struggled to get back on his own feet after his album flopped.

Along the way, Davis stumbles upon a particular orange cat whom he takes from one place to another. In the end, he finally learns the cat’s true name. Its presence just reflects upon Davis’ next big step.

4 Corleone’s Cat (The Godfather)

Hollywood cannot get enough of tabbies that they also stumble upon gangster films. In the iconic opening scene, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) is accepting requests from his guests before his daughter’s wedding. And as he does, he can be scene stroking a gray tabby cat.

What is amusing about this cat is that Francis Ford Coppola never intended to feature a cat on that scene. However, the stray cat stumbles upon the studio; and Coppola simply took it and hand it over Brando. Thus, it completed an iconic scene.

3 Duchess And Company (The Aristocats)

Back in the Disney vault, The Aristocats tells the story of a family of posh cats, one of them being the elegant white cat Duchess, who gets kidnapped by a butler to gain his mistress’ fortune. With the help of a fun-loving feral cat named Thomas O’Malley, they try to find their way home to their owner Madame Adelaide.

Cat lovers will certainly find delight on the presence of Duchess and the supporting cast of cats (except that Chinese cat) that love music and have fun escorting Duchess and company.

2 Blofeld’s Cat (James Bond Franchise)

One of the requirements of being a villain is having a pet cat. That is best demonstrated by Ernst Blofeld and his white Turkish Angora cat (again unnamed). It first appeared in From Russia with Love to foreshadow Blofeld’s presence as James Bond’s formidable nemesis. Just the first shot of him stroking his cat brings serious impression.

Even if it not being named, Blofeld’s cat brings a lot to the table that it becomes his hallmark. This also influenced Dr. Evil’s quirk with Mr. Bigglesworth for the Austin Powers franchise.

1Puss In Boots (Shrek Franchise)

Fear him if one dares! Puss in Boots becomes a loyal confidante to Shrek after the green ogre spared him after King Harold hired him to slay him. With this act, he tags along with Shrek and Donkey on their quest to solve his conundrum with Fiona.

Puss is easily a genuine breakout character who comes off with his Zorro-like chivalry and suave swordsmanship. And Antonio Banderas best captured this cat’s effervescent charm. And who cannot resist his cute pouty eyes? Puss is an adorable presence to take home with.
