The finale episode of the iconic Korean War comedy M*A*S*H aired on Feb. 28, 1983—40 years ago this year. When the story of the 4077, a mismatched crew of doctors and staff working in a makeshift mobile Army surgical hospital in South Korea, concluded, the finale to the long-running series became the most-watched and highest-rated single television episode in TV history.

Swit inherited the role of head nurse of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan from Sally Kellerman, who held the part in the M*A*S*H movie. After the show ended, she continued acting in small roles on shows like The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote. In recent years, Swit took a step back from the spotlight, instead designing jewelry and raising money for animal rights charities. in 2013, she returned to acting in a one-woman touring stage production of Eleanor: Her Secret Journey as Eleanor Roosevelt.
After playing the beloved Dr. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, Alda has gone on to have a successful acting career in TV and film, landing roles on ER, The West Wing, 30 Rock, and The Big C, as well as movies like The Aviator and Wanderlust. More recently he starred as Dr. Atticus Sherman on The Big C and as Alan Fitch on The Blacklist.
The actor behind the cross-dressing Sergeant Maxwell Q. Klinger has gone on to take small roles on shows like The Love Boat and Mad About You, but now focuses his energy on theater productions and has served on the advisory board of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
After bringing Father Francis Mulcahy to life for M*A*S*H's 11 seasons, Christopher joined many former co-stars with stints on The Love Boat and Murder She Wrote. He returned to a churchly role lin 2012 as Father Tobias on Days of Our Lives. Christopher died on December 31, 2016 from small-cell carcinoma.
The star who played Colonel Sherman T. Potter died at age 96 in 2011, but before his death, he had a prolific career packed with an Emmy win, TV appearances (The Love Boat, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and The Twilight Zone, to name a few), and stage roles.
Farrell has followed up his turn as Captain B.J. Hunnicut with an array of TV parts on Superman, Desperate Housewives, Law & Order: SVU, and more. Most recently he portrayed David Rogers on the TV series The Red Road and Lee Miglin on The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Like many of her co-stars, the actress behind Lieutenant Kellye Yamato went on to a host of other minor TV roles. She also landed a role in 1998's Dr. Doolittle. Today, she mostly works on her watercolor art under her married name, Kellye Wallett.
The only actor from the M*A*S*H movie to come to the show as a regular character, Burghoff played the animal-loving Radar. In recent years, except for one small film in 2010, he has mostly stayed in retirement from acting.
After he played Major Charles Winchester, Stiers found success as a voice actor, bringing characters from Lilo & Stitch, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, and more, to life. More recently, he returned to TV as Arthur Isles on Rizzoli & Isles and Mr. Maellard on Regular Show.
Linville played the bumbling Major Franklin Burns, and followed up his time on M*A*S*H with appearances on Murder, She Wrote, Grandpa Goes to Washington, the Jeffersons, and more. In 2000, Linville died at age 60 after complications from lung cancer surgery led to pneumonia.
