And Just Like That Season 2: SJP Doesn’t Want Kim Cattrall To Return

Sarah Jessica Parker stated that there's too much public history for former co-star Kim Cattrall to return in a possible season 2.

And Just Like That star Sarah Jessica Parker doesn’t want former co-star Kim Cattrall to return in a possible season 2. The actresses have had longstanding tension that culminated in Cattrall refusing to take part in the Sex and the City revival. Cattrall, who played the sex-positive PR exec Samantha Jones, has been vocal about being done with the franchise but fans still hoped she would change her mind.

And Just Like That has become the most-watched show ever on HBO Max but it has also been one of the most divisive. Fans of Sex and The City have criticized how the show has handled certain storylines, with the three main women (Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York-Goldenblatt, and Miranda Hobbes) seemingly acting out-of-character compared to the original series. One of the biggest criticisms has been how the show handled the absence of Samantha. In the show, Samantha has a falling out with Carrie & co. and moves to London. She occasionally contacts Carrie via text and sends flowers for Mr. Big’s funeral, but many felt that a friend as loyal as Samantha would never be so distant or petty.

In a Variety interview, Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie, was asked if she would welcome Kim Cattrall back if Cattrall wanted to return to the series. Parker said that it would be hard to welcome her back to And Just Like That. Cattrall has very publicly shared negative views regarding the show and her relationship with Parker. Famously, a third Sex and the City movie was in the works until Cattrall backed out. Parker stated it would be hard to imagine Cattrall dropping this tense history to return to the show. Check out Parker’s full statement below:

“I don’t think I would, because I think there’s just too much public history of feelings on her part that she’s shared. I haven’t participated in or read articles, although people are inclined to let me know.”

Though it seems unlikely to expect Kim Cattrall to return as Samantha in And Just Like That season 2, the writers left the door open for her character to still be part of the story. The season finale ends with Carrie traveling to Paris to spread Big’s ashes. After that moment of closure, she reaches out to Samantha, now living in London, to meet up again for a cocktail. Via text, Samantha agrees, ending the episode on a hopeful note. While we won’t see a scene of Samantha and Carrie together, one can imagine an off-screen scenario where the two rekindle their friendship over a Cosmo and some gossip.

Samantha has long been a fan-favorite character for many Sex and the City fans, and her presence is sorely missed in the reboot. Her character certainly put the “sex” in Sex and the City, and many say that without her, the reboot is missing the provocativeness and open-mindedness that made the original so special. Even if Samantha doesn’t return in And Just Like That, maybe one day we’ll see her again in some capacity. Perhaps a spin-off of Samantha Jones in London á la Emily in Paris?
