Better Call Saul Season 5, Episode 6 Might’ve Referenced Jesse Pinkman

Better Call Saul season 5, episode 6, "Wexler v. Goodman", contained what appears to be a reference to Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

Better Call Saul season 5, episode 6, “Wexler v. Goodman” featured some Breaking Bad references, and one might’ve been an Easter egg hinting at none other than Jesse Pinkman. Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Better Call Saul has been moving closer to Breaking Bad over the past few seasons. As well as charting how Bob Odenkirk’s Jimmy McGill becomes Saul Goodman, fans have also seen the beginnings of Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), and many others within the Breaking Bad universe.

Things have gone even further this year, with Better Call Saul season 5 introducing Hank Schrader (Dean Norris), Steven Gomez (Steven Quezada), and Ed Galbraith (the late Robert Forster). However, the two biggest characters from Breaking Bad – Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) – have yet to appear on Better Call Saul. In “Wexler v. Goodman”, there’s the return of Mike’s alias Dave Clark (first used in Breaking Bad), and an appearance from Detective Tim Roberts (Nigel Gibbs). It’s in the latter of these where there’s potentially a reference to Jesse.

When Roberts is introduced in Better Call Saul season 5, episode 6, he’s having a conversation on the phone. While we can’t hear who is on the other end, the gist of the conversation is clear. Roberts is talking to someone about a possum underneath their porch, although the person on the phone is concerned this could be a dead body. It’s a humorous conversation in the moment, but it calls back to Breaking Bad‘s divisive episode, “Fly”, and something Jesse told Walt about his aunt Ginny.

As one of their many conversations while unable to leave Gus’ superlab, Jesse asks Walt if he’s ever had a wild animal trapped in his house. When Walt replies no, Jesse begins to tell him about a possum under his house, back when it belonged to his aunt: “…It’s not so much that it got trapped but he was living there, you know? Under the house… It was just a total b**ch to get out. Took forever. A guy came. Set all these traps and all. And he, he finally got him. But my aunt, you know, she didn’t believe it. I mean, she kept insisting she could still hear the thing. And you could not tell her any different.”

Jesse mentions his aunt becoming obsessive about the possum, and it sounds like it could be a similar scenario to the one we’re hearing in Better Call Saul, especially at the beginning of it. The timeline roughly matches up between the two, since this is a few years prior to Breaking Bad, so it’s possible that the possum being discussed here is the same one that was living under Jesse’s house before his aunt passed away. Detective Roberts mentions animal control, which lines up with the people coming to remove the possum, and he refers to the person on the other end of the phone as “Sir”, so it’s not impossible that he’s even talking to Jesse himself, who would be calling on behalf of his aunt (and may potentially suspect a dead body himself at first). Of course, it’s possible these two incidents are unrelated, but this would be a fun way of Better Call Saul subtly referencing both Jesse Pinkman and one of the best Breaking Bad episodes, and in keeping with the show’s connections as well.
