The sixth season of Better Call Saul will have fans see certain events of its predecessor, Breaking Bad in a much different way. Better Call Saul is the spinoff and prequel of the latter, exploring the character of Jimmy McGill, who is a former con artist trying to turn his life around and make a name for himself as an earnest lawyer. In Breaking Bad, which takes place after the events of Better Call Saul, Jimmy appears under a pseudonym Saul Goodman, a “criminal” attorney who supervises Walter White and Jesse Pinkman on their criminal activities. Better Call Saul begins six years before the events of its predecessor, offering flash forwards that open each season showing the status of Jimmy McGill after the years on Breaking Bad. The series also features many well-known characters that appear on Breaking Bad, including Mike Ehrmantraut and Gus Fring, showing their journeys leading into the Walter White crime drama. As the seasons of the prequel go on and the show gets deeper into the universe of Breaking Bad, the timeline of Better Call Saul slowly inches closer, with one more season left to tie things together.
In an interview with THR about his successful film Nobody, Bob Odenkirk, who plays Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman, touched on the final season stating that while he does not know the entire storyline of the season and is patiently waiting as he receives the scripts, he has been told by co-creator Peter Gould that once everything wraps up, fans of Breaking Bad will have a different perception of things. Yes, absolutely. In fact, I’ve been told by Peter Gould that when Better Call Saul wraps up, everyone will see Breaking Bad in a different light. I don’t know what that means. I don’t have any specifics beyond that, except that he knows what happens throughout this whole season of Saul and I don’t. But I think there are more amazing things to come that will comment on or inform the actual incidents of Breaking Bad in a surprising way.
With Better Call Saul being a prequel, those who have seen Breaking Bad know how certain characters from the show end up, such as Mike and Gus. But for viewers who haven’t seen the series starring Bryan Cranston, they are still aware of Saul Goodman’s future due to the flash forwards. While the show is largely about watching the journey of McGill and learning how he turns into the sleazy, unethical lawyer, it also highlights Mike’s transition into the crime world from being a former police officer.
With the final season of Better Call Saul on the horizon, it is safe to assume that once the series ends and everything is full circle, fans who have seen both series will think differently, specifically when watching Breaking Bad, after knowing the journey and fates of all the Better Call Saul characters.
