Cobra Kai Season 5 Trailer Breakdown

Season 5 of Netflix's Cobra Kai is arriving sooner than expected, so here's a breakdown of all the new footage from the announcement trailer.

Cobra Kai started out as a relatively small project, but it has since grown into one of Netflix’s biggest and most consistently watched hits. Season 4 came out last December, and it was a massive success, focusing on an uneasy alliance between sensei Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Their adversary? None other than the legendary Terry Silver, who returned as a conniving, Darth-Sidious-like mastermind. In the end, Silver got the better of the LaRusso-Lawrence combo, so Season 5 will be about how they strike back.

Series co-creator Jon Hurwitz announced via Twitter that Season 5 had already finished filming in December. So, fans have been eagerly awaiting any news about the coming season, and it finally happened. In a surprise move, Netflix dropped a trailer and announced that Season 5 of Cobra Kai will premiere on September 9. So, here’s a breakdown of all the juicy, new footage.

Terry Silver’s Big Plan Is Finally Happening

Back in 1985, a despondent John Kreese called in the big guns. After what happened in the first Karate Kid film, he needed to get back at Mr. Miyagi, and Terry Silver was the only person that could help him do it. Together, they hatched a plan that would have ended with Cobra Kai dojos all over the San Fernando Valley. Of course, that didn’t happen then, but it’s happening now. As expected after Season 4, Terry Silver has put his business plan and his massive wealth into action. As Season 5 opens, Cobra Kai is bigger, better and more evil than ever before.

Tory Is Struggling After Her Defeat

Right at the end of Season 4, Tory Nichols defeated Samantha LaRusso in the All Valley Karate Tournament. That win cemented Cobra Kai’s victory over Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang, but there was a problem. As Tory was leaving the event, she saw that Terry Silver had bribed one of the officials into making sure that she won. The trailer showed that she is struggling with the knowledge that she didn’t really win and the fact that her sensei cheated.

The Return of the Infamous Quicksilver Method

Part of Terry Silver’s plan in 1985 was to utterly break Daniel LaRusso. Silver took advantage of his conflict with Mr. Miyagi and used it to his own benefit. Part of that was teaching Daniel the Quicksilver method of karate, where he made Daniel train against a wooden dummy. The Season 5 trailer showed the return of that dummy, as Silver looks to take advantage of Tory’s personal struggles.

A Chozen and Silver Rivalry Is Brewing

Season 4 showed that Johnny was going to Mexico to find Miguel, and that left Daniel alone in the fight against Silver. However, the surprise return of Chozen could help turn the tide. The new trailer showed a number of scenes with the karate master, as he is taking the fight with Silver very seriously. He even whipped out a pair of Sai daggers when Daniel metaphorically said that he wanted to “cut the head off the snake.” We can only hope that we get a legit showdown between Chozen and Silver at some point.

Johnny Lawrence Has Bitten off More Than He Can Chew

At the end of Season 4, Johnny promised Carmen (who we should learn more about in Season 5) that he would find Miguel, but that’s a big task. Eventually, he will find him, but there’s still emotional conflicts to be had, which will likely mimic The Karate Kid III. Not to mention, Johnny’s plans are seldom up to snuff. When he finds out that Miguel had something to do with a cage-match karate league, he dresses up like an FBI agent to start asking questions. And there’s nothing like foreign law enforcement asking questions about a possibly shady business. Naturally, he’s already in a fight before the end of the trailer.

Miguel Gets His Rematch with Robbie

When Johnny goes after Miguel, he’s taking Robbie with him. Why did Robbie agree to that? Well, he didn’t. Johnny only told him that they were going to find Miguel after they got there. Naturally, that didn’t go over well, and one of the marquee moments of the trailer was a glimpse of a fight between Miguel and Robbie. They haven’t fought since the school brawl at the end of Season 2, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
