Game Of Thrones Change Spoils House Of The Dragon’s Ending – Theory Explained

The House of the Dragon trailer has a significant Game of Thrones change, and the difference may spoil the upcoming HBO fantasy series' ending.

The House of the Dragon trailer reveals a significant change from Game of Thrones, and the difference may spoil the upcoming series’ ending. House of the Dragon reveals House Targaryen’s bloody history hundreds of years before HBO’s Game of Thrones. A trailer for HBO’s fantasy prequel revealed some of the main players in the show, including Paddy Considine’s King Viserys Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy’s Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke’s Alicent Hightower. However, Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen makes the strongest impression, providing the video’s narration and noting that the Targaryens gained their power in Westeros on the backs of dragons.

Game of Thrones’ controversial season 8 ending brought one fan theory to life. Before the series finale, fans speculated that the show would result in the Iron Throne’s destruction. By destroying the throne, HBO’s show could subvert expectations, thereby making the question of who sits on the throne irrelevant. Then, in the show’s final episode, Drogon discovers Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) lifeless body after Jon Snow (Kit Harington) murders her. The dragon goes into a rage, and his grief leads to a blast of fire that melts the Iron Throne, proving the fan speculation.

The House of the Dragon trailer reveals a Game of Thrones change that may spoil the show’s ending. In the trailer, the Iron Throne appears more menacing than ever. While the original HBO series had a somewhat modest throne, the throne in the House of the Dragon trailer is much larger, including several more swords in its design. Since the throne in the prequel is much bigger, it may show the prevailing Targaryen king, Aegon III, changes the throne when he takes over in House of the Dragon.

It’d make sense for Aegon III to change the throne in House of the Dragon or become the catalyst for the change. The young king takes control of the Westeros power seat as a child following the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, an event House of the Dragon will cover. However, despite being king, the early years of his reign are indeed ruled by the Hand of the King and several regents. He dismisses his Hand and the regents on his sixteenth birthday, so it’s not a stretch to think he makes changes to the Iron Throne as well. After all, Aegon III had a traumatic life, even seeing his mother eaten by a dragon during the Dance of the Dragons. If anyone would look to make changes in Westeros, it’d be him. The throne is also dangerous, so removing some of its swords is reasonable to ensure a child king’s safety.

If the throne changes in the House of the Dragon ending, it could mirror Game of Thrones. Miguel Sapochnik, House of the Dragon’s co-showrunner, already noted that the series would pay homage to its fantasy predecessor. And the first trailer already shows the dagger Arya (Maisie Williams) used to kill the Night King (Vladimír Furdík) reappearing in the series. So with the Iron Throne melting in the Game of Thrones finale, it makes sense that House of the Dragon mirrors the moment with its own Iron Throne deconstruction.
