Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon Sets Premiere Date

HBO's Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, which centers on the Targaryens, sets a premiere date with a fiery new poster.

HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon finally has a premiere date.

The premiere date of Aug. 21 was confirmed with a fiery new poster featuring a dragon egg hatching and the glowing eyes of a dragon in the background.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is a prequel series set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The show centers on House Targaryen’s rise to power in Westeros and stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

“I think we were very respectful of what the original show is,” co-showrunner Michael Sapochnik said in October 2021 while discussing how House of the Dragon will differ from Game of Thrones. “It wasn’t broken, so we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show. But first, it’s very important to pay respects and homage to the original series, which was pretty groundbreaking. We’re standing on the shoulders of that show and we’re only here because of that show. So the most important thing for us to do is to respect that show as much as possible and try and complement it rather than reinvent it. And I was involved in making the original show, so I feel like that’s been useful. Like, I’m not arriving going, ‘Let’s change everything! Let’s do a different color palette!’ No, I quite like the color palette.”

Smith, who plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, elaborated on the Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon differences the following month. “I suppose you bring yourself and your own spin on it,” he said. “It’s like to a certain degree, what does anyone bring to a Shakespeare play or something that’s been done before? You have to bring your own emotional makeup and your own identity and your own spin and take on things and, you know… throw some paint at the wall and see what sticks.”
