Taika Waititi Can’t Remember His Mandalorian Droid’s Name

Taika Waititi hilariously forgets the name of IG-11, the bounty hunter droid that he voiced in three episodes of The Mandalorian season 1. The New Zealander is perhaps best known for his recent work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – having directed 2017’s Thor: Ragnorak and its sequel releasing this summer, Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi is also an accomplished filmmaker outside of the MCU franchise, winning an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020 for Jojo Rabbit.

In addition to writing and directing, the multi-hyphenate has also lent his voice to a number of high-profile projects as well. In the MCU, Waititi voices and provides motion-capture performance for Korg, the soft-spoken Kronan rock warrior who befriends Thor in a Sakaaran cell in Ragnarok. His voice will also be heard this summer in Disney Pixar’s Lightyear as Mo Morrison, a member of the titular astronaut’s crew. One of Waititi’s standout characters of late is the bounty hunter droid IG-11, who was introduced and killed off in the first episode of The Mandalorian season 1. However, IG-11 was resurrected and reprogrammed by Kuiil as a nurse droid and protector for Grogu, later sacrificing himself to take out a platoon of stormtroopers.

Appearing on WIRED‘s Autocomplete Interview series in which guests answer the internet’s most searched questions about themselves, Waititi was faced with the softball question, “Who does Taika Waititi play in The Mandalorian?” though he hilariously forgot the name of his droid and answered, “IG-88,” before quickly second-guessing himself and saying “Or 11.” After locking in “IG-88” as his final answer, a voice offscreen corrects Waititi, informing him that his droid from The Mandalorian is, in fact, named IG-11. Read how Waititi bumbled through the answer below:

Who does Taika Waititi play in The Mandalorian? IG-88. Or 11. I play a bounty hunter droid called IG-88. Oh. [laughing] Who does Taika Waititi play in The Mandalorian? IG-11, of course. And even that’s just my own accent! This is really revealing for me. don’t think I’ve actually worked a day in my life.

Waititi hasn’t played the character of IG-11 for a few years now, so the memory lapse is understandable. In the meantime, he has been hard at work acting in or directing various other projects, such as The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, What We Do in the Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, Lightyear, Love and Thunder, and even his own Star Wars movie. Therefore, it’s not unreasonable that Waititi may forget the last two digits of a droid’s name that he voiced several years ago.

Interestingly enough, there have been reports that IG-11 might be resurrected once again and return in The Mandalorian season 3, with his parts seemingly savaged by Jawas and cobbled back together. His voice could possibly be altered as a result of that process, so it’s unclear if Waititi would also be back to voice IG-11 if the droid does return. Only time will tell when The Mandalorian season 3 premieres in February 2023.
