Why Luke Skywalker Is Still Wearing Black After Return Of The Jedi

There’s a sad potential explanation as to why Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) surprisingly appeared on The Book of Boba Fett still wearing black five years after Return of the Jedi. Lucasfilm’s latest Disney+ series revolved around the fan-favorite bounty hunter as he attempted to take over Jabba the Hutt’s criminal empire in Mos Espa. But aside from Boba Fett and the series’ supporting characters, it also featured a string of surprise guests from the bigger franchise, including Luke Skywalker.

Lucasfilm debuted the de-aged Luke during The Mandalorian season 2 finale. After Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) spent the whole year trying to reunite Grogu with the Jedi, he finally succeeded when the legendary Jedi Master showed up in time to help them fight Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and his Empire remnant minions. From there, “the Child” was taken by Luke to train as he rebuilds the Jedi Order, and The Book of Boba Fett offered an update as to how his plan was progressing.

When Luke showed up on The Book of Boba Fett, he was sporting an all-black ensemble. This may be an unimportant detail to some, but it’s worth noting that Lucasfilm specifically dressed him in dark clothes in Return of the Jedi to mislead people into believing that he could potentially join the dark side. Ultimately, it’s revealed that he was wearing white garb underneath his clothes. But, since it has been five years since Return of the Jedi, it’s still curious why Luke was still sporting his dark get-up. Though this could just be a fashion choice, it also may well have something to do with the death of Anakin Skywalker, as this could be Luke’s way of continuously grieving his father. Considering his ties to Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), chances are that Luke has learned more about his dad as a great Jedi and dependable ally before he was manipulated by Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) to become Darth Vader. This would’ve understandably made it more difficult for him to move forward, as it would evoke old feelings of regret and sadness over not being able to have a normal relationship with him.

The Book of Boba Fett barely revealed anything regarding the status of Ahsoka’s relationship with Luke. In fact, it’s still uncertain how they first met, as the show started with them already in touch with each other. But based on their limited interactions on the series, it appeared as if they’ve had developed a friendly dynamic. Ahsoka could even openly compare Anakin with his son. While she didn’t expound on her comments, it seemed as if Luke understood what she meant perfectly. Eventually, however, they had to part ways as Ahsoka presumably continues her hunt for Grand Admiral Thrawn – but it seems more than likely that the two spent some time bonding over Anakin, and that Luke continued wearing black while working through his grief over his lost family and the life he could have led were things to have turned out differently.

It’s difficult to tell when or if Ahsoka and Luke will cross paths again. Based on what’s known about the young Skywalker’s arc in Star Wars, he will continue to work on rebuilding the Jedi Order, which, ultimately, fails after Ben Solo’s (Adam Driver) turn to the dark side. But as tragic as it is to think that he continues to grieve his dad five years after Return of the Jedi, at least he’s learning more about Anakin before he became Darth Vader.
