Did The Book of Boba Fett Just Tease the Return of Din Djarin?

The Book of Boba Fett began by slowly wrapping in cameos from the far corners of the Star Wars galaxy. By delving into Boba’s current and former affairs, the Disney+ series has demonstrated a love of franchise lore while moving the story of Tatooine forward. In the most recent episode, however, a musical reference to the past hints at the return of none other than Din Djarin, The Mandalorian.

Episode 4, “The Gathering Storm,” focused on Boba’s ongoing attempts to build alliances and strengthen his grip on Jabba the Hutt’s former criminal empire. The flashback sequence revisits his discovery of a wounded Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) in The Mandalorian Season 1, and charts the early days of their partnership, which serves as a counterpoint to Boba’s effort to ally with the other Tatooine crime lords (who refuse to help but nevertheless agree to stay out of his way). Afterward, Fennec and Boba discuss the need to call in allies to ease their move against the encroaching Pyke Syndicate. The theme to The Mandalorian then plays over the scene, indicating the colleague they have in mind.

Boba Fett’s reintroduction to Star Wars canon, following his apparent death in 1983’s The Return of the Jedi, came on The Mandalorian, first in a Season 1, Episode 5, tease, and then fully in Season 2, Episode 6. After Boba and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) cemented their mutual respect in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale, the mid-credits scene refocused on Boba Fett, with the one-time bounty hunter killing Bib Fortuna and laying claim to Jabba the Hutt’s former empire, thus, setting up his Disney+ spinoff.

Boba’s plan to call on Din Djarin appears to be yet another in his series of new communal relationships to further his still-unclear agenda. It does seem odd that, among Boba’s presumably numerous connections, Din is the one whom Boba decides to single out for his attention. Apparently, Boba is intent to use his entire network, including Mando and possibly Black Krrsantan, to liberate Tatooine from the Pykes.

Exactly how Boba intends to take on the Pykes is vague at best. However, there are some possibilities based upon how the Boba Fett and Din Djarin worked together on The Mandalorian. To begin, both use their network and bounty hunter training to strengthen their ranks. The use of Beskar and Mandalorian tech also makes the two a force to be reckoned with as they fight side-by-side. Finally, both offer aerial abilities through their jetpacks that most of their allies aren’t able to provide. This balance may be why Mando’s first thought of a loyal, useful ally was Din.

Fans will likely soon receive an update on one of their favorite characters while also seeing progress take shape on Boba’s front. With a series as full of cameos and Star Wars deep cuts as The Book of Boba Fett has been, it’s easy to see why fans are excited by the possibilities offered from this little musical riff.
