Henry Cavill Still Open To Being the Next James Bond

The Witcher and Superman actor Henry Cavill won't rule out starring as the next James Bond following Daniel Craig's swansong in No Time To Die.

Actor Henry Cavill is still open to being the next James Bond, according to a recent interview. The Witcher star Cavill began his film career in Dennis Berry’s drama-thriller Vendetta, originally titled Laguna, before roles in The Count of Monte Cristo and Stardust saw his career pick up. Cavill’s first prominent part came in the TV series The Tudors (2007-10), where he played the role of Charles Brandon. In 2013, the Jersey-born actor was catapulted to international fame when he portrayed Clark Kent/Superman in the superhero film Man Of Steel.

Cavill has enjoyed a successful career since inaugurating the DCEU, starring in movies such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Justice League (2017), and Enola Holmes. In 2019, he won the role of protagonist Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher novels, which has become a popular fantasy series in its own right. Currently, Cavill is filming the upcoming spy film Argylle, and clearly the genre is one that appeals to the 38-year-old.

In an interview with The Times (via EOnline), Cavill speaks about his upcoming projects, as well as potential plans for the future. He discusses a part that he has been linked with all year – James Bond. Appearing keen but keeping things noncommittal, Cavill, who auditioned unsuccessfully for the part in 2006, seems upbeat about his chances. Read Cavill’s comments from the interview below:

Time will tell. You don’t know which direction they want to take Bond in and so I like to say that everything’s always on the table.

The role of James Bond is one of the most coveted in all of cinema, particularly for a English actor like Cavill. With Daniel Craig enjoying his 007 swansong in No Time To Die, the role of Britain’s most famous secret agent will need to be recast again, for the first time since ’06. As has been the case since the franchise began, it is likely that a new Bond will signal a fresh direction for the character and the films, and this will require an actor, whether male or female, who ticks all the requisite boxes.

The vacancy of the Bond role always gets tongues wagging, and there have been plenty of names mentioned as possible successors to Craig, not least Cavill. Whether it will ever happen remains to be seen; Cavill enjoys a busy schedule as a big name star these days, but there is no doubt this is a role the actor would want to make room for. One man who certainly believes the Mission: Impossible – Fallout star would be the perfect fit for Bond is Argylle director Matthew Vaughn, who was quoted as saying, “I needed someone born to play Bond—which Henry is—and then to nick him before Bond did.” There are many out people who will agree with Vaughn’s sentiments, but whether fans see Henry Cavill in the role depends entirely on the Bond producers, as well as a multitude of factors aligning.
