House Of The Dragon: 10 Movies & TV Shows Where You’ve Seen The Cast Before

The highly-anticipated Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, will premiere sometime this year with an ensemble cast you might've seen before.

For most of the 2010s Game of Thrones was the show of a generation. It entertained and shocked audiences for nearly a decade and brought together an all-star cast of veterans and relative newcomers. The show came to a rocky end in 2019, though not without the promise for more time in Westeros.

House of the Dragon will follow the Dance of the Dragons, the famed civil war that initiated the fall of House Targaryen. While viewers wait to see dragons flying over the Seven Kingdoms again, they can watch the cast in these movies and TV shows.

Eve Best – Princess Rhaenys Velaryon

The King’s Speech

Princess Rhaenys Velaryon is respected by the smallfolk of Westeros as “the Queen Who Never Was.” She’s a fierce warrior with her own dragon named Meleys, the Red Queen, and almost became the queen of Westeros at one time – though she was sexistly overlooked.

Eve Best takes on the role of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon in House of the Dragon. She has an extensive career across movies, television, and theatre. Particularly, viewers might remember Best as Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor and wife of the abdicated, King Edward VIII, in 2010’s The King’s Speech.

Paddy Considine – King Viserys I Targaryen

Macbeth

Possibly the most consequential character set to appear in House of the Dragon is King Viserys I Targaryen. He was selected in the Grand Council that disregarded Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, yet when the time came to name his own heir, his indecision ended up tearing it apart from the inside.

King Viserys is played by Paddy Considine who has a rich history both in front of and behind the camera. He played Banquo in the 2015 film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and even received a Tony Award nomination for his work on The Ferryman.

Olivia Cooke – Lady Alicent Hightower

Ready Player One

In the history of Westeros, Lady Alicent Hightower actually becomes Queen and the second wife to King Viserys I. Her son, Aegon, also plays an important role in the Targaryen civil war, yet no information regarding him in House of the Dragon has been revealed thus far.

English actress Olivia Cooke plays Lady Alicent with Emily Carey portraying her younger self. Cooke is no novice to leading roles – she also starred in Steven Speilberg’s Ready Player One as a different Cooke: Samantha Cooke aka Art3mis.

Emma D’Arcy – Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen

Truth Seekers

The Dance of the Dragons split the Seven Kingdoms in two with one side fighting for Lady Alicent’s son, Aegon, and the other for his half-sister, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. As the eldest child of King Viserys, she would expect to be his heir, yet she was denied this upon his death.

She’ll likely be one of the most important characters in House of the Dragon and is played by Emma D’arcy. They are a relative newcomer, though they can be seen in the short-lived British series Truth Seekers, available on Amazon Prime Video.

Fabien Frankel – Ser Criston Cole

The Serpent

The Kingsgaurd have a significant history in Westeros and several members will appear in House of the Dragon, including Ser Criston Cole. He is a remarkable character –a common-born soldier whose prodigious swordsmanship allows him to rise to prestige as a knight and Kingsguard.

He will likely be a great source for action in the show and actor, Fabien Frankel will be bringing him to life. This will be his largest role yet, but he does have some credits to his name – such as Netflix’s TV show The Serpent and even Last Christmas alongside Queen Daenerys herself, Emilia Clarke.

Jefferson Hall – Lord Jason & Tyland Lannister

Game Of Thrones

A new pair of twins from House Lannister is set to play an important role in the fate of Westeros: Lord Jason Lannister and his younger twin, Tyland. Jason is the head of the family and Lord of Casterly Rock, while Tyland is described as a cunning politician, likely serving as one of the king’s advisors eventually.

Both Jason and Tyland are played by the same actor, Jefferson Hall. Interestingly, Hall appeared in the first season of Game of Thrones as Ser Hugh of the Vale who died jousting with the Mountain. Since then he also had recurring roles in Vikings and starred in 2018’s Halloween.

Rhys Ifans – Ser Otto Hightower

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 1

Lady Alicent’s father, Ser Otto Hightower will likely be to House of the Dragon what Tywin Lannister was to Game of Thrones. They are both wise and cunning, from ancient and powerful families, and served as Hand to the King for numerous rulers.

Rhys Ifans, who is well-known and recognized in other fandoms for his previous roles, portrays Otto Hightower. He was Xenophilus Lovegood – father to everyone’s favorite, loveable witch Luna Lovegood – appearing in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Ifans also reappeared recently as the Lizard in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Sonoya Mizuno – Mysaria

Devs

The most mysterious character set to appear in the upcoming series is Mysaria, a foreign dancer and secret conspirator connected with Prince Daemon Targaryen. She will likely fulfill the role that Varys played in Game of Thrones as the Master of Whisperers, though perhaps more action.

Mysaria is played by Sonoya Mizuno, who is a trained ballet dancer. Mizuno has performed in many major movies such as Beauty and the Beast and La La Land – but, she is probably best known for her starring role on the FX miniseries, Devs.

Matt Smith – Prince Daemon Targaryen

Doctor Who

Though he never officially sat on the iron throne and ruled over the Seven Kingdoms, Prince Daemon Targaryen’s influence is infamous and long-lasting. He is King Viserys’ younger brother, a brilliant warrior, and even has important dalliances with Princess Rhaenyra (his niece) and Mysaria.

Daemon is played by Matt Smith, a popular actor with a vast catalog of roles. Of course, he is best known for his time in Doctor Who as the eleventh doctor. This isn’t his first time playing royalty – he was Prince Phillip on The Crown, for which he earned an Emmy nomination.

Steve Toussaint – Lord Corlys Velaryon

Red, White, And Blue

Lord Corlys Velaryon is also known as the Sea Snake, one of the world’s greatest explorers. Over his life, he sailed around the known world from the far North – perhaps into the Lands of Always Winter and the home of the White Walkers – to the mysterious Asshai by the Shadow. Eventually, he returned to Westeros, married Princess Rhaeyns, and became an advisor to Princess Rhaenyra.

Steve Toussaint will be playing this great seafarer in House of the Dragon. While Toussaint has appeared in numerous projects – such as Red, White, and Blue alongside John Boyega – his resume isn’t limited to just movies or tv shows. He’s lent his voice to World of Warcraft and Jurassic World Evolution as well.
