House of the Dragon: George R.R. Martin Confirms Filming Has Wrapped

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin recently confirmed that HBO’s upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon wrapped filming.

On his blog, Martin wrote, “Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them. Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post production work.” He added, “But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to Ryan and Miguel and their team, and to our amazing cast.”

Martin has been open with audiences about progress on the upcoming show. He previously revealed that he has seen early cuts of House of the Dragon and praised the production, writing, “I’ve seen a rough cut of the first episode. And loved it. It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral… just the way I like my epic fantasy.” He went on to add, “[Executive producers] Ryan [J. Condal] and Miguel [Sapochnik] have done an amazing job, and the cast… just as with Game of Thrones, most viewers will only have heard of a few of the actors, but I think you are going to fall in love with a lot of them.”

In spite of the recent update, the series still does not yet have a release date. HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys previously explained that the lack of a release date comes as a result of caution surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now that production is complete, discussions have begun with regard to setting a premiere date for House of the Dragon.

As popular as Game of Thrones was, audiences can expect a markedly different series with House of the Dragon. The upcoming show is set some 200 years prior to the War of the Five Kings and follows the rise and fall of House Targaryen and their legendary dragons. Co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik has explained in the past, “House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show. But first, it’s very important to pay respects and homage to the original series, which was pretty groundbreaking.”
