‘House of the Dragon’: George R.R. Martin Makes Another Big Announcement While the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Remains Without a Premiere Date

House of the Dragon wrapped filming last month. But with so much post-production work left to do, the premiere date for season 1 of the Game of Thrones prequel remains a mystery. Author George R. R. Martin has revealed that he’s already seen rough cuts of a few episodes, and he says he’s “loving them.” He also made another big announcement — he has a companion book for the series coming soon.

Martin recently gave an update about House of the Dragon on his blog, telling fans that filming for season 1 was officially done.

“So far, I am very excited. House of the Dragon has wrapped in London and is now in post-production,” Martin wrote. “What I have seen, I have loved. I am eager to see more. I am excited about the other successor shows as well, however. I am dying to tell you all about them, but I am not supposed to, so…”

The Fire & Blood author also gave a shout-out to House of the Dragon’s writers, directors, and actors, saying that they “all look terrific” in the episodes he has seen.

“I hope you will like them [the season 1 episodes] as much as I do. My hat is off to [showrunner Ryan Condal] and [co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik] and their team, and to our amazing cast,” Martin wrote.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel remains without a premiere date

The author told fans that there’s still “lots of work” ahead for House of the Dragon season 1, and the series remains without a premiere date. However, the first teaser that HBO dropped confirmed that fans will see the prequel at some point in 2022. And Martin said that a summer 2022 release date “could be” possible.

House of the Dragon takes place approximately two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. It will focus on an event known as the Dance of the Dragons, a bloody and brutal civil war among House Targaryen.

Meanwhile, Deadline is reporting that the Random House imprint Ten Speed Press is publishing a companion book to House of the Dragon known as The Rise of the Dragon.

The book is an illustrated history of the Targaryen family from Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, which inspired Game of Thrones.  The history of the House Targaryen is also the focus of Fire & Blood, the source material for the new prequel.

The Rise of the Dragon will hit bookstores on October 25th, and it will include 180 all-new illustrations. It is the work of Martin, Elio M. García, Jr, and Linda Antonsson. It will reportedly cover the first half of the Targaryen dynasty — from Aegon the Conqueror through the regency of Aegon III Dragonsbane.

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are now playing on HBO Max. House of the Dragon will premiere on HBO later in 2022.
