House of the Dragon Release Date Is Coming Soon, Says George RR Martin

The release date for HBO's fantasy epic House of the Dragon could be unveiled soon according to a tease from author George R.R. Martin.

George R.R. Martin says the release date for HBO’s highly-anticipated series House of the Dragon will be revealed soon. In 2011, HBO took Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, turned it into a television show called Game of Thrones, and changed the TV landscape forever. Fast forward to today, and Game of Thrones has been complete for almost three years now. HBO is eager to continue expanding the world of Westeros with a slew of spinoffs; the first, House of the Dragon, is expected to arrive sometime this year.

Set hundreds of years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will explore the history of the Targaryens, the onetime ruling family of Westeros. The series begins during the reign of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) and is expected to cover the epic Targaryen civil war, which is often referred to as the Dance of the Dragons. As one of HBO’s most anticipated shows of 2022, House of the Dragon has already received substantial hype. What it hasn’t received yet, though, is an actual premiere date.

Said date still hasn’t been announced, but Martin has hinted fans’ patience will be rewarded soon. In his most recent “Not a Blog” post, Martin briefly commented on House of the Dragon while remarking on the fantasy shows fans are likely looking forward to. He mentioned that Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be arriving in September before adding that, for House of the Dragon, “well, you will know soon.” He also added that he knows fans are still waiting on The Winds of Winter.

Last month, HBO head Casey Bloys explained the House of the Dragon release date delay, citing the coronavirus pandemic as one reason why the network has been hesitant to schedule it. HBO wished to avoid setting a date that might have to be changed further on down the road. With production having been completed and the TV landscape looking increasingly cluttered, Martin’s update about House of the Dragon is actually quite promising. It sounds like he already knows when the series will arrive, and that HBO might be getting closer to announcing it.

In years past, TV shows not receiving premiere dates well in advance wasn’t anything new. However, 2022 has seen an uptick in networks and streamers setting dates months ahead of time for their biggest shows. House of the Dragon will be a major event, and one might assume HBO will want to avoid competing with anything like the aforementioned Rings of Power. However, Bloys has also said there hasn’t been any concern about that. Therefore, a late summer/early fall premiere for House of the Dragon isn’t out of the question. That is the earliest it could conceivably premiere at this point, but until HBO confirms its date, anything can happen.
