House of the Dragon: Two Minor Roles That Could Have a Major Impact

House of the Dragon has cast many major roles. However, it's the inclusion of two relatively minor roles that might have the biggest impact overall.

Several key roles in the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon have been cast and announced, yet two relatively minor roles that have yet to be officially cast could have a major impact on the upcoming series. In the original series, many of the main actors cast were relatively unknown, at least in the US, yet became widely known after the popularity of the series grew. Additionally, roles that in the early seasons of Game of Thrones that seemed minor or insignificant grew to have a huge influence on the trajectory of the series as a whole. This could also be the case with two deceptively minor roles in House of the Dragon.

A prequel to the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is set two hundred years before the events of the original HBO series. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, and the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war known as the “Dance of the Dragons.” In the novel, the divided Targaryen house takes opposing sides in the fight for the Iron Throne, and the question of succession within the dynasty.

Amongst the divided Targaryen’s, the novel also introduces two twin Kingsguard named Arryk and Erryk Cargyll, and though they are relatively minor characters at first, their journeys in the novel Fire & Blood could come to have a major impact on House of the Dragon. The casting of these characters is currently unofficial, however, rumors have been circulating suggesting that the roles have been given to Elliot and Luke Tittensor, most well known for playing Carl Gallagher in the British version of Shameless. However, the two are relatively unknown in the US. That said, their casting in these deceptively minor roles (the Cargyll twins) could also propel the twin actors into high acclaim in the US, much like many British actors before them from Game of Thrones.

Though the exact role the Cargyll twins will play in House of the Dragon is currently unknown, it’s clear that, in the past, Game of Thrones has demonstrated a fascination with sibling and twin dynamics. Most notably, the Lannister twins Cersei and Jamie grew to be massively influential over the course of the series’ run, even ending up on opposite sides of the Lannister/Targaryen fight for the throne at one point. Given Game of Thrones’s interest in twins, it’s likely the Cargyll twins will also have a large, perhaps tragic, impact on the story of House of the Dragon.

In the original series Game of Thrones, the creators and writers showed little restraint when it came to killing off seemingly pivotal characters cast with big-name actors. Sean Bean’s Ned Stark comes to mind, for example. Conversely, seemingly minor players like Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark eventually came to have major roles in the overreaching series. It’s possible that the Cargyll twins, allegedly cast with relative unknowns, could mirror a similar path.

The spinoff series already features big-name talent like Olivia Cooke and Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, taking on the role of a Targaryen. However, it’s possible that, as the series progresses, seemingly minor characters like the Cargyll twins, whose arcs may mirror that of the Lannisters, may come to overshadow some of the A-list talent the series has already attracted. At the very least, their rumored casting makes it clear that the somewhat minor Cargyll twins may actually have a big role to play in House of the Dragon.
