“I think he would be fabulous. He’s the right height, he’s got the hairline, he can sing, he’s suave,” she said, of Jackman. “He could handle that”.

While the project is still in development, Jennifer Love Hewitt has already committed to play Deana.

Martin, 66, admits finding the right man to portray her much-loved father is a tough ask. But she says other than finding a talented, unknown actor to play her father, Jackman is one of the few Hollywood stars who could carry it off.

“Trying to find someone who could play Dean Martin is very, very difficult,” Martin said. “You know what, we were brought up right. He said ‘you always treat people how they want to be treated … show up early, always be on time, leave everybody happier when they leave’,” she said.

Her father was undoubtedly one of a kind and adored worldwide as a singer and performer. Deana Martin grew up as part of Hollywood royalty — she was close to the Sinatras, not to mention the children of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

While they occasionally appeared on magazine covers with their parents (in carefully approved photo shoots) they were generally protected from public scrutiny otherwise.

Martin told Confidential she is saddened by the way the children of big-name stars are thrust into the spotlight these days.

“Right now, I just feel sorry for all of them,” Martin said. “(It used to be) much more respectful.”

“It’s a lot tougher now, it really gets me sad when I think about these kids growing up — they can’t walk down the street and that’s tough.”

Deana Martin kicks off her tour in Bankstown on Friday night, with other Sydney shows in suburbs including Castle Hill, Dee Why and Campbelltown.
