‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Melissa Gilbert Announces New Book ‘Back to the Prairie’

Little House on the Prairie’s Melissa Gilbert revealed the upcoming release of her fourth book, Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade, A Life Rediscovered. This marks Gilbert’s second time writing a memoir that relates to her time in Walnut Grove.

“I’m so excited to announce the publication of my fourth book, Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade, A Life Rediscovered,” the former Laura Ingalls captioned a post on her Instagram. “I owe such enormous thank yous to so many people who contributed to this effort.” She then goes on to thank her husband as well as her publisher.

Her first book, Prairie Tale: a Memoir, was released in 2010. It chronicles her childhood working on the show as well as her young adult years partying and then settling down. The book made the New York Times Bestseller List. Other books include a Little House on the Prairie-themed cookbook and a children’s book called Daisy and Josephine.

Now, Gilbert once again writes about her life, but from a different perspective. The Little House on the Prairie actress wrote about her completely life-changing move just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The synopsis reads:

“When her husband introduces her to the wilds of rural Michigan, Melissa begins to fall back in love with nature. And when work takes them to New York, they find a rustic cottage in the Catskill Mountains to call home. But “rustic” is a generous description for the state of the house, requiring a lot of blood, sweat, and tears for the newlyweds to make habitable.”

“When the pandemic descends on the world, it further nudges Melissa out of the spotlight and into the woods. She trades Botox treatments for DIY projects, power lunching for gardening and raising chickens, and soon her life is rediscovered anew in her own little house in the Catskills.”

Gilbert Reveals Worst Little House on the Prairie Memory

Additionally, Gilbert revealed her worst childhood memory in a recent interview. Little House on the Prairie was filming in Tucson, Arizona at this old Western town called Old Tucson. Gilbert was in her “awkward” phase and was trying to fit in with the other kids.

“So we had a break. And all us kids went and got root beer floats,” Gilbert explained. “And then we came back to where we were filming, which was in this old bar. The other thing you have to know is there were a lot of cowboys on our set. They were stuntmen and wranglers — so, a lot of people who chewed tobacco. And there was a rule that they weren’t allowed to spit on the ground. So they handed out, like, red solo cups for the guys to spit in.”

Unfortunately, readers can probably guess where this is going. Gilbert sat her drink down while she was rehearsing, then came back and took a giant sip. Only, it wasn’t her drink she took a sip of; it was one of the spit cups.

“And I just exploded and spit this stuff everywhere!” Gilbert added. “At first I stopped and thought, maybe I can swallow this and no one will know? But it was the most disgusting — I can’t even. It took me a second to realize this wasn’t root beer. You know how it all happens in a flash? And when I realized what it was and there was nothing else for me to do but pwaaaahhh and tears are running down my face. I’m so glad I didn’t vomit. I was screaming and jumping up and down, I couldn’t have made more of a scene.”

After running back to her dressing room, Gilbert returned to film the scene, but she couldn’t drink root beer floats for 40 years after that.

The Little House on the Prairie star’s latest book hits the shelves on May 10, 2022.
