Sopranos Prequel Movie Many Saints Of Newark Release Date Delayed To 2023

Alan Taylor's Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, has officially been pushed back from September 2020 to March 2021 due to coronavirus.

Warner Bros.’ Sopranos sequel film The Many Saints of Newark has officially been delayed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Sopranos, widely considered to be one of the best television shows of all time, ran for six seasons on HBO before ending its run in 2007. Starring the late James Gandolfini as mob boss Tony Soprano, the series focused on Tony’s juggling of his home life and his position as the head of a criminal organization. The Sopranos was created by David Chase and also starred Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, and Michael Imperioli. Further cementing its place as one of the most respected shows of all time, The Sopranos won 21 Emmy awards during its run. Gandolfini’s performance was especially praised and continues to be remembered to this day.

In 2018, it was announced that Chase would be returning to the world of The Sopranos for The Many Saints of Newark. Taking place during the ’60s and ’70s, The Many Saints of Newark will see Tony’s formative years among a new cast of characters. Game of Thrones‘ Alan Taylor has signed on to direct, and Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini, will play the young Tony. Also starring in the film is Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Leslie Odom Jr., Billy Magnussen, and Ray Liotta.

Warner Bros. announced today that The Many Saints of Newark has been pushed back from its original release date of September 25, 2020. Instead, the film will be released on March 12, 2021. This marks the first fall 2020 movie to be delayed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Many Saints of Newark is hardly the only Warner Bros. movie to see its release date affected by the pandemic. Much of the studio’s upcoming DC films saw their dates rearranged, including The Batman and Shazam 2. Those were likely changed because of an inability to resume/start production on time, while it’s unclear about exactly why The Many Saints of Newark was shifted. Most likely, it’s because of a general concern regarding movie theaters reopening in time, though there is a chance post-production has yet to be completed.

Theaters across the US are currently shut down, but many are hoping to reopen by July. There are still a handful of blockbusters scheduled for July and August, like Warner Bros.’ own Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984. There’s a good chance The Many Saints of Newark would have been okay all the way in late September, but Warner Bros. probably didn’t want to take the chance. Instead, they’ve moved it to a time when (hopefully) things will have been back to normal for a while, and it can get its best chance at a solid theatrical run. So for those looking for their next Sopranos fix, it might be easier to revisit the series for the time being.
