‘M*A*S*H’: Alan Alda’s Wife Explained Why She, Family Were Out of Public View for Many Years

Although actors in the entertainment world are thrust into the public eye as a part of their job, that doesn’t always mean they want the same for their family. Alan Alda, known for his leading role in the sitcom “MAS*H,” was hesitant to welcome the public into his private life. Alda had become a widely known figure in the entertainment world and has also earned six different Emmy Awards and six Golden Globes during his career.

While he’s most known for his acting talent, Alda was a professional behind the camera. He had also been a director and screenwriter. In a 1981 interview, Alda’s family enters the limelight a little. This is right around the time that Alda had been in “The Four Seasons.” This is a movie that he wrote and directed.

The interviewer also shares that his two daughters, Beatrice and Elizabeth, are in the film. He didn’t want the interviewers to show a clip of them “not wanting publicity” for his two daughters.

At the time, this was the first professional acting gig for both of Alan Alda’s daughters. They were film students at the time trying to gain experience. So, while he may not have wanted them to get too much publicity, Alda was still encouraging of their dedication to become film actors.

Alda Personal and Public Life

The interviewer also talks to Alda’s wife, Arlene Weiss. The two met when they were both college students. Alan Alda was attending Fordham and Arlene was at Hunter College. They had three daughters together. She very rarely appeared in interviews over the years. However, she said that it was her own choice and that he “doesn’t control me.”

Despite her distance from the spotlight, she is also very encouraging of her daughters pursuing whatever it is they love.

“I want them to be happy and secure in what they do and have a good perspective and be well prepared if this is the field they choose to go into,” Arlene Alda said.

Arlene also never let jealousy get in the way of their relationship, either. The droves of adoring fans don’t at all bother her. She said, “I have to laugh because to me those are faces and numbers that mean nothing to me personally.”

The couple’s daughters did not end up extensively pursuing acting after all. Beatrice Alda was in “The Four Seasons” and “Men of Respect.” She does, however, have a career as a director in films like “Out Late” and “Legs: A Big Issue in a Small Town.” Elizabeth only ever appeared alongside her father in his film and the short-lived TV version.

Since his long career acting, directing, and writing, Alan Alda is still keeping busy. He has released several books in the last few years. One of which was “Thing I Overheard While Talking to Myself.”

He also announced to the world that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a few years ago. He said that he is doing fine so far.

One of his most recent projects is his podcast, “Clear + Vivid” on Apple Podcasts.

Alda talks to a variety of guests on different topics. He said to KTLA 5, “I’m having the best time. It’s an education for me. I really love it.” He has spoken with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Chief Medical Advisor to the President and a key person during the ongoing pandemic. Alda said that he learned a lot from Dr. Fauci.

He told Dr. Fauci, “When you take the vaccine, I’m taking the vaccine.” He added that he believes “it’s really important that we trust science because it’s done carefully it’s not another opinion, it’s rigorous.”

Alda also opened up about the reason he never stops working. He says it “keeps me going.” He has adapted to the times and his co-workers even call him “the world’s oldest millennial.”
