MASH‘s upcoming reunion is exciting, but the surviving cast came already together just five years ago. CBS’ groundbreaking war comedy-drama is re-assembling its remaining actors for a special that will celebrate the legacy of the series. Running for 11 years, MASH is widely regarded as one of, if not the best in its genre, effectively marrying humor with more serious topics. It functioned as a commentary on the horrors of war, whether intentional or not, all while providing great and consistent entertainment throughout its more than a decade-stint on the small screen.

Alan Alda, who played Captain Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce, and the rest of the surviving cast members of MASH will be reuniting in a special two-hour broadcast that will air on Fox on January 1. Gary Burghoff (Cpl. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly), Jamie Farr (Cpl./Sgt. Maxwell Q. “Max” Klinger), Mike Farrell (Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt), and Loretta Swit (Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan) are all confirmed to appear in what’s being billed as a “definitive” look back on the legendary series. Naturally, there’s massive anticipation over the event, although the same ensemble just got together back in 2019.

The MASH Cast Previously Reunited In 2019

In the February 4, 2019 episode of Alda’s podcast, Clear+Vivid, Burghoff, Farr, Farrell, and Swit came together for “The Actors from M*A*S*H — On How M*A*S*H Changed Our Lives.” Clocking in at an hour and eight minutes, which is significantly longer than its usual run time, the episode was full of great moments, both funny and emotional, as the actors reminisced on their time working closely with each other in MASH. They also discussed spending time with many of their castmates who have passed away since the series wrapped up in 1983. Based on their demeanor, it’s clear that everyone cherishes their time on the set and loves each other dearly.

Why MASH Still Needs A 2024 Special Despite The Cast’s Recent Reunion

Despite having just gotten together on Alda’s podcast, there’s still a need for the upcoming MASH reunion on Fox for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it will be a celebration of its iconic finale, “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen’s” 40th anniversary. The cast wasn’t able to stage any special project when the episode hit the milestone back in February 2023, and this will effectively make amends for that. Secondly, the cast is getting old now. Although everyone is still quite active in their endeavors, it’s best to do this kind of reunion sooner rather than later.

It’s also worth noting that the Fox format will allow for a better overall experience for fans. While Clear+Vivid’s reunion was only through audio, the upcoming special will have visuals of all the participating cast members. Based on reports, it will feature never-before-seen content from the beloved series as well, which would allow the cast to discuss them more in-depth. In any case, considering how seminal MASH was, it will be hard-pressed to find anyone who will be mad to see its cast together again.
