CBS will reportedly expand their NCIS universe with a new spinoff, NCIS: Hawaii. The network hasn’t confirmed the news just yet. But insiders say they are currently staffing the series, and fans are already voicing their excitement for an Aloha State spinoff. There’s even a former star of Hawaii Five-O who loves the idea.
CBS is heading back to the Aloha State with ‘NCIS: Hawaii’
The first claim that the NCIS universe was expanding came from The Hollywood Reporter in February 2021. The publication revealed that CBS was canceling NCIS: New Orleans at the end of the current season. They also claimed the network was close to a direct-to-series order for the new Hawaii spinoff
NOLA showrunner Christopher Silber and EP Jan Nash are reportedly taking over the new Hawaii spinoff. They will be teaming up with SEAL Team writer Matt Bosack.
All of this chatter about NCIS: Hawaii comes just one year after CBS canceled Hawaii Five-0, which came as a huge shock to fans. The network still has a production base in the Hawaiian Island thanks to the canceled action-procedural. They will reportedly use the same facility as their production base for NCIS: Hawaii.
The network didn’t reveal why they canceled ‘Hawaii Five-0’
In February 2020, CBS suddenly announced that Hawaii Five-0 would be airing their final episode on April 3, 2020. It was meant to be a special two-hour finale. But when the pandemic hit the USA just days after that announcement, plans quickly changed.
Instead of a special two-hour finale, viewers got two final episodes aired separately. There wasn’t even an explanation of why the show was coming to an end. Insiders suggested that stars Scott Caan and Alex O’Loughlin were ready to move on, as both of their contracts were coming to an end.
Christopher Sean loves the ‘NCIS: Hawaii’ idea
CBS has not yet revealed any casting news about NCIS: Hawaii. But fans have some big ideas about who they want to see in the spinoff. Many would like a crossover between NCIS: Hawaii and Hawaii Five-0, even though the latter is no longer on the air.
Hawaii Five-0 star Christopher Sean loves the idea for the new NCIS spinoff, as well as a possible crossover. When a fan recently asked Sean on Twitter if it was possible he could reprise his role and have his character, Gabriel Waincroft, “challenge the Navy,” the actor replied, “Love that idea.”
‘Hawaii Five-0’ was known for its crossover events
During its 10-season run, the Hawaii Five-0 reboot made stars out of Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, and Lauren German. Sean joined the cast in season 4 as one of the series’ major antagonists – a dangerous fugitive and former Yakuza. His character was pronounced dead at the end of season 6, which means a crossover with Gabriel Waincroft is unlikely.
However, Hawaii Five-0 loved crossover events and did them often. Over the years, the series regularly crossed over with the reboots of MacGyver and Magnum P.I. The now-canceled series also had a special crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles.
Could there be familiar faces on ‘NCIS: Hawaii’?
According to Express, there’s still a good chance fans could see some familiar faces in the NCIS spinoff. Someone from Hawaii Five-0 could show up when the new team works a case. There’s also the possibility that CBS could bring back some NCIS fan-favorite characters.
The most popular theory at the moment is the possible return of Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly). De Pablo’s schedule looks to be wide open, according to her IMDB page. There’s a chance she could be back to lead her own team.
As for Weatherly, his series Bull has not yet been renewed. CBS would need to cancel that show for fans to get their wish of DiNozzo leading the team of NCIS:Hawaii.
