Pokémon Trailer Shows First Look at World Championship Tournament’s Battles

Pokémon Ultimate Journeys previews the explosive battles that Ash, Leon, Cynthia and the other World Championship contenders will face.

A new trailer for Pokémon’s World Coronation Series arc has been released.

The new preview was released through the series’ official Japanese Twitter account and highlights the eight trainers who have the potential to be the anime series’ new World Champion. The group includes popular characters from all eight of the franchise’s currently released regions, including Cynthia, a fan-favorite Pokémon Master from Sinnoh, and Leon, the champion of the Galar league from 2019’s Pokémon Sword and Shield. The trailer also highlights each trainer’s trademark Pokémon partner; Ash is shown with Pikachu, Dragon-type specialist Iris is seen commanding her Haxorus, while Hoenn’s League champ Steven heads into battle with his Mega Metagross.

The arc is being promoted in Japan as the “climax” to the Pokémon Journeys anime, which has been running continuously in Japan since 2019. The series is being released in North America as a Netflix streaming exclusive. While the show has maintained its original title in Japan, the series’ Western release has split it up into three different shows: the first part of the show was simply known as Pokémon Journeys: The Series, which was then changed to Pokémon Master Journeys last September. Netflix recently announced that it will release further episodes of the show under a new title, Pokémon Ultimate Journeys.

While the Journeys anime will end with the current arc, its likely that the show will continue with a season themed around the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The two new titles are the first games in the video game series’ ninth generation and are scheduled to premiere exclusively on the Nintendo Switch sometime later this year. As with previous generational-shifts in the series, it’s probable that the anime will be rebranded with a new title and Ash will receive some new traveling companions to tie-in with the franchise’s newest video game releases.

Netflix says it begin releasing new episodes of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys sometime before the end of 2022, but in the meantime Pokémaniacs can watch a different Pokémon anime series, entitled Hisuian Snow. The miniseries is set in the same region and time period as Legends: Arceus and was produced by Wit Studio, the acclaimed animation production company behind Ranking of Kings and one of this season’s biggest hits, Spy x Family. The three-episode anime is being released for free through the official Pokémon YouTube channel and the Pokémon TV app, which is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as the Nintendo Switch.
