Star Wars Explains A Stormtrooper Mystery From The Mandalorian Season 1

A flashback in The Book of Boba Fett episode 3 provided the answer to a stormtrooper mystery that dates back to The Mandalorian season 1.

A flashback in The Book of Boba Fett answered a stormtrooper mystery from The Mandalorian season 1. A previous episode of Disney+’s first live-action Star Wars show revealed that several stormtrooper heads were placed on pikes and displayed at the Mos Eisley spaceport on Tatooine. A reason for why they were there was never explicitly stated on The Mandalorian.

Once again, the Star Wars universe has returned to Tatooine, which has served as the setting of so many adventures in the franchise. This time, it’s the focus of two different stories surrounding the iconic bounty hunter, Boba Fett. By keeping its focus on the desert planet, The Book of Boba Fett has already contributed much to Tatooine lore through new details about the rancor species, the culture of the Tusken Raiders, and more. And since The Mandalorian took place at least partially on Tatooine (and featured both Boba Fett and Fennec Shand), there’s been quite a few links between the two shows.

The Book of Boba Fett episode 3’s flashback story answered a question posed by The Mandalorian season 1, episode 5, which relates to the stormtrooper heads mentioned above. When Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) was riding by on his bantha to reach the Pyke Syndicate, he saw a human putting one of the heads on a pike. Since this takes place five years ago and lines up with the fall of the Galactic Empire in Return of the Jedi, the scene makes sense of why there were in The Mandalorian. It seems that this was how the residents of Mos Eisley responded to the Empire’s defeat.

Glad to have their community purged of imperial forces, the settlement presumably used the heads as an expression of their hatred toward the villains that had oppressed them. Ahead of The Book of Boba Fett, many had already arrived at the same conclusion, though there were some doubts that the heads would remain there for such a long period of time. As it turns out, they have indeed been rotting there in Mos Eisley for five years. Even so, the moment provided yet another welcome link between the two Star Wars shows. Adding to that was a second unexpected connection, which was a blink-and-you-missed-it cameo from The Mandalorian’s Peli Motto in the same scene.

Part of what makes the shot of the stormtrooper heads in The Book of Boba Fett episode 3 so interesting is that it addressed the immediate aftermath of the Rebels’ victory at the end of the original Star Wars trilogy. Since The Mandalorian is set five years later, this wasn’t something that the series has been able to explore in a meaningful way. But with The Book of Boba Fett doing a flashback story that shows what happened to its title character after Return of the Jedi, the series has opportunities to dive into this important period in Star Wars history.
