Star Wars Suggests Grogu & Luke’s First Meeting Still Hasn’t Been Shown

Star reveals how The Mandalorian season 2's Force vergence on Tython really works - revealing Luke's first meeting with Grogu hasn't been shown.

Star Wars has revealed the first meeting between Luke Skywalker and Grogu has yet to be shown. The Mandalorian season 2 focused on Din Djarin’s mission to find a Jedi who would train Grogu in the ways of the Force. He found his way to Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s old Padawan, who sent him to the Jedi planet Tython.

In the old Expanded Universe, Tython was the home world of the Jedi. That’s not the case in Disney’s canon – corrupt archaeologist Doctor Aphra described it as having been found by “the earliest Jedi cults” in one comic – but it’s still a powerful vergence in the Force. By meditating on a so-called “seeing stone,” Grogu was able to reach out across the cosmos and draw the attention of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. The mystical experience Grogu went through was never shown, however, with The Mandalorian simply showing him encased in an impenetrable energy field until it was completed. Fortunately, an excerpt from a tie-in novel, Adam Christopher’s upcoming novel Shadow of the Sith, shows what it’s like to use the seeing stone on Tython.

The excerpt is set years after the events of The Mandalorian season 2, shortly before the sequel trilogy. Luke Skywalker himself uses the Force vergence on Tython in an attempt to discover the location of the Sith redoubt of Exegol. His consciousness is actually transferred to the place he is seeking, more than a mere vision because it is as though he is there, even battling the Sith spirits defending Exegol. This has enormous implications for The Mandalorian season 2, because it’s reasonable to assume Grogu’s experience was a similar one, and that his consciousness was transported in some mystical way. He didn’t just catch Luke’s attention by using the seeing stone; he met him through the Force. This certainly explains why Grogu reacted so strongly when Luke Skywalker arrived to rescue him from Moff Gideon, as he knew the Jedi he had first encountered through the seeing stone on Tython had come to rescue him.

In narrative terms, it made sense for The Mandalorian season 2 to avoid showing exactly what Grogu experienced. The show’s viewpoint character is really Din Djarin, who is unable to sense the Force and therefore views all this from an outsider’s perspective. He can only look on in wonder and confusion. Meanwhile, avoiding showing Luke Skywalker and Grogu interact through the Force allowed Lucasfilm to build up the sense of drama, and keep Mark Hamill’s return a surprise to viewers.

Still, hopefully it won’t be long before Lucasfilm finally show the first meeting between Grogu and Luke courtesy of Tython’s seething stone – perhaps in adaptations of The Mandalorian season 2 into other mediums. It would be fascinating to see how Luke reacted to a vision of the diminutive alien viewers still love to call “Baby Yoda,” given his continuing reverence for his old teacher. Lucasfilm has always been well aware of the importance of fan-service, and they’re unlikely to miss this opportunity with Star Wars.
