The Book of Boba Fett: 10 Ways It Sets Up Season 3 Of The Mandalorian

The Book of Boba Fett set up many key plot points and conflicts for season 3 of The Mandalorian.

The Book of Boba Fett felt a lot like The Mandalorian season 2.5. This was particularly true with the fifth episode “Return of the Mandalorian,” an installment entirely focused on Din Djarin, and again in the sixth episode “From the Desert Comes a Stranger” as Din headed to the planet where Luke Skywalker was training Grogu.

These episodes in particular did a lot to show how Din, Grogu, and other Mandalorian characters have progressed since the end of season 3, along with setting up many key plot points and conflicts for season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Grogu Training With Luke

“From the Desert Comes a Stranger” shows that Grogu’s training with Luke Skywalker is already underway. Luke has already helped Grogu reconnect with the Force and relearn many important abilities that he learned before the tragedy of Order 66.

When fans see Grogu in season 3 of The Mandalorian, he will be stronger, confident, and wiser when it comes to the Force thanks to his training with Luke. Things like meditating and Force jumps will be second-nature to Grogu now as a result of the training seen in The Book of Boba Fett.

Grogu Chooses To Be A Mandalorian Instead Of A Jedi

The Book of Boba Fett‘s sixth episode left fans with a massive cliffhanger as Luke offered Grogu the choice to be a Jedi or a Mandalorian. If Grogu chose the Beskar chainmail that Din had made for him, Grogu would choose the Mandalorian path. If Grogu chose the green lightsaber that once belonged to Yoda, he would choose the Jedi path.

The Book of Boba finale revealed that Grogu chose the chainmail. He chose to be a Mandalorian over being a Jedi and was already dropped off on Tatooine to be reunited with Din. This choice is not surprising and feels natural as it gives Grogu a future with Din and it prevents Grogu from being at Luke’s Jedi Academy when it is destroyed during the sequel trilogy era.

Episodes Focused On Book Of Boba Fett And Ahsoka Characters

The Book of Boba Fett showed how deeply intertwined it is with The Mandalorian and the Ahsoka series. This has set a precedent that fans should continue to expect.

The Book of Boba Fett had episodes focused on Mandalorian main characters like Din Djarin and Grogu. Season 3 can thus have episodes that are focused on Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, or Ahsoka Tano, even though they are not Mandalorian main characters. The name of each individual series is less important than the larger interconnected story being told across The MandalorianThe Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.

Din Needs To Master The Darksaber

Din won the Darksaber from Moff Gideon in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. Even though he did not want it, Bo-Katan refused to take it from him. He uses it in The Book of Boba Fett to get his bounty, but he injures himself with it, and he also struggles to wield it when sparring with the Armorer. Paz Vizsla tries to win it from Din in combat, but Din wins the fight and maintains his claim over it.

Din knows how to use a melee weapon, but the Darksaber is its own unique kind of weapon that is not only literally powerful, but holds tremendous symbolic weight. Din has not mastered the Darksaber yet or what it means to wield it and will need to continue working on that in season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Din Must Go To Mandalore For “Redemption”

Din’s main mission in season 1 of The Mandalorian was protecting Grogu, and his main mission in season 2 was helping Grogu reunite with his own kind. Grogu has now decided to reunite with Din. Din will undoubtedly continue to protect Grogu, but there needs to be more than that to the story of Din in season 3. The Book of Boba Fett makes it seem like the primary mission will be for Din to go to the planet Mandalore to redeem himself. In the eyes of the Armorer, he is no longer a Mandalorian because he removed his helmet.

According to her, the only way he can redeem himself and become a Mandalorian again is if he goes to the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore. Din says the mines have all been destroyed, but the Armorer makes it clear this is the only option available to him. It will be fascinating to see what Mandalore is like all these years after the Great Purge and the Night of a Thousand Tears.

Din’s New Ship

Din’s Razor Crest ship was blown up by Moff Gideon’s Imperial remnant in season 2 of The Mandalorian.  He needs a new ship and he gets it in The Book of Boba Fett.

Through working with Peli Motto, her droid helpers, and some Jawas, Din fixes and redesigns what was once a Naboo N-1 Starfighter. He is skeptical about it at first, but loves the ship once he flies it. Grogu was also shown to love the ship in The Book of Boba Fett finale. Din and Grogu will continue to use this ship in season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Moff Gideon Still Needs To Be Brought To Justice

When Din explains to the Armorer and Paz Vizsla that he won the Darksaber from Moff Gideon in combat, he also shares that he didn’t kill Gideon, and that Gideon was sent to the New Republic for interrogation. Neither the Armorer nor Paz Vizsla seem satisfied with this outcome for Gideon. Paz Vizsla believes Din should have killed him and the Armorer agrees that only death is a just punishment, as Gideon has done many terrible things and he has the blood of millions of Mandalorians on his hands.

When Din says Gideon will be executed for these atrocities by the New Republic Tribunal, the Armorer responds with an ominous “We’ll see.” Gideon’s fate will surely be addressed in season 3 of The Mandalorian, and based on how the Armorer and Paz Vizsla react in this scene, it is possible that they will try to take Gideon’s fate into their own hands. Regardless, it will be interesting to see if Gideon remains the primary antagonist or if his role shifts into something else.

Grogu’s Influence Over Other Creatures

When the rancor was raging through Mos Espa, it was Grogu who was able to calm the mighty creature down and put it to sleep. Fans have seen Grogu display many incredible Force abilities before, from Force healing Greef Karga’s lethal wounds to levitating a mudhorn in midair.

If Grogu could do this with a rancor, there is no telling what he could do with other creatures. Grogu’s influence will likely grow further in season 3 as he and Din encounter a variety of beings across the galaxy.

Bounty Hunting

In order to get information on where the Armorer was located, Din hunted down a Klatooinian with a bounty on him, and killed him and all of his associates.

It was not about the bounty or the credits; it was about the information Din got in exchange for completing the job. Nevertheless, it shows that bounty hunting is still a part of his life. If it helps with becoming a Mandalorian again in the eyes of the Armorer or protecting Grogu, Din will surely take on another bounty hunting job.

The Armorer Vs. Bo-Katan

The Book of Boba Fett planted the seeds for a battle between the Armorer and Bo-Katan Kryze. When Din asks the Armorer if she has heard of Bo-Katan, the Armorer claims that Bo-Katan is a cautionary tale. She essentially blames Bo-Katan for cursing Mandalore and the Mandalorian people, making it seem as if Bo-Katan’s choice to take the Darksaber without winning it in combat is the reason that the Great Purge and the Night of a Thousand Tears happened.

Both the Armorer and Bo-Katan want to reclaim Mandalore, but they have very different beliefs, and they will definitely clash given what the Armorer thinks of Bo-Katan. Given his relationship with both of them and that he won the Darksaber, they will both try to influence Din and he will be caught in the middle of their struggle.
