The Crown season 5 is not coming to Netflix in December 2021. It would have made for a great Christmas surprise after season 4 released in November 2020, but unfortunately that won’t be the case.
The Netflix drama follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II from the 1940s to modern times, and the fourth season brought viewers into the “most tumultuous decades” for the royals — the 1980s. Having finished binge-watching season 4, we can’t wait to sit down and tune back into the next chapter of the fictional royal drama.
According to Digital Spy, The Crown season 5 has begun filming, so when could we expect the addictive drama to return to Netflix?
The Crown season 5 release date
As we’ve previously reported, The Crown will be returning to the streamer in November 2022! This does make sense, considering the majority of the previous installments — with the exception season 2, which debuted in December 2017 — came out in November. The new season will consist of 10 episodes in keeping with previous seasons, something IMDb confirmed in December. A whole new star-studded cast is set to see the show through its final seasons.
While we still have nearly a whole year to go until the next installment of The Crown, fans can at least take comfort in knowing that season 5 isn’t the end for Netflix’s royal drama. The Crown season 6 has already been confirmed! When can we expect it?
While season 6 hasn’t even begun filming yet, showrunner Peter Morgan confirmed that it will be the final season! This is great news considering back in January 2020, Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter that although he had originally “imagined The Crown running for six seasons” while drawing up the storyline for season 5, he realized it was the “perfect time and place to stop.” However, that is no longer the case, and they’re back to the original plan.
“As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said.
The Crown season 6 release date
So when can we expect The Crown season 6 to be released on Netflix? Well, realistically probably not until at least 2023. We can only offer a prediction at this time, but we expect season 6 to follow a similar release pattern to its predecessors, so we’re thinking The Crown season 6 could have a release date of November 2023.
