The Mandalorian Fan Art Imagines Din Djarin Speaking With His Younger Self
A piece of The Mandalorian fan art paints a touching scene of Din Djarin visiting his younger self to comfort him after the loss of his parents.
Din Djarin speaks with his younger self in a piece of The Mandalorian fan art. Din (Pedro Pascal) continued his journey after the events of The Mandalorian season 2 in the latter three episodes of The Book of Boba Fett. Having finished his quest of returning Grogu to the Jedi, he was left with nothing other than a heavy conscience and an important Mandalorian artefact: the Darksaber. The Book of Boba Fett saw Din learn more about Mandalore, get a N-1 Starfighter to replace his destroyed Razor Crest, and even reunite with Grogu, all of which will work to bridge The Mandalorian season 2 and season 3.
With Grogu returned to Mando’s side, the story of The Mandalorian season 3 seems to be pointing towards Din’s personal journey as he grapples with the way of his people and heads to Mandalore. The Armorer foreshadowed this journey in The Book of Boba Fett episode 5, when she sent him on a quest for atonement in “the living waters beneath the mines of Mandalore” after discovering Din had removed his helmet. Din’s acquisition of the Darksaber had also pointed his path towards Mandalore at some point, and emerging details from the set of The Mandalorian season 3 seem to confirm a journey to the infamous planet. There’s still another journey Din has yet to go on, however – with everything Mando has done for Grogu, he hasn’t yet had time to process his personal journey onscreen.
Now, fan art by @itzenthusiasm on Twitter shows Din coming across his younger self on that personal journey. The art displays him as a child dressed in the red robes of his people, first seen in flashbacks during The Mandalorian season 1, and being comforted by the fully armored, grown-up Din. The warrior kneels in front of his younger self, who cries at the still-fresh loss of his parents, and holds his hands as he reassures him by saying, “It takes a while… but things get better… I promise.” See the full emotional fan art below:
The art is a beautiful representation of the journey Din will likely embark on in The Mandalorian season 3. Should Din make it to the living waters beneath Mandalore, the experience may provide him with a chance to completely heal his inner child. His time spent with Grogu has already started much of that work, but he will need to fully come to terms with everything he’s been through since the fateful day on his home world in order to fully heal that wounded part of himself. If his struggles with the Darksaber are similar to those that Sabine Wren experienced in Star Wars Rebels, having this encounter could also help Din in wielding the Darksaber the way he’s meant to.
No matter how it actually happens, many things about The Mandalorian season 3 seem to emphasize Din and his Mandalorian journey going forward. Seasons 1 and 2 have focused heavily on both Din and Grogu and their relationship to each other, and The Book of Boba Fett (coined as The Mandalorian season 2.5) worked to wrap up Grogu’s Jedi journey for now. This allows season 3 to fully focus on the titular character as he works through personal matters, such as the identity crisis that came with meeting Mandalorians who can remove their helmets. There’s a lot left for Din to learn, and with the Darksaber on his belt and a guilty conscience calling him to Mandalore, The Mandalorian season 3 is shaping up to bring its hero through a transformative journey.
