The Mandalorian Season 3 Reportedly Bringing Back IG-11

New reports suggest that the nurse droid IG-11 could be receiving a Palpatine-style resurrection to protect Grogu in The Mandalorian season 3.

Nurse droid IG-11 may be getting the Palpatine treatment for The Mandalorian season 3. The ex-bounty droid, voiced by Taika Waititi, became a beloved character with an unexpected but welcomed redemption arc in season 1, whose sacrifice deemed him worthy of earning his very own statue on Nevarro. After being reprogrammed by Kuiil (Nick Nolte), he dedicated the remainder of his life to protecting Grogu, as well as the child’s faithful adopted father. He was responsible for saving Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) life after getting blown up by Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and for increasing his trust in droids, which cemented his status as an unexpected hero in Din’s story.

Ever since Grogu lost his nurse droid with IG-11’s sacrifice in the season 1 finale, Din has struggled to find good ways to protect the little one. In the opening scene of “Chapter 10: The Passenger,” Grogu was thrown from a speederbike and held at knifepoint when he and Din were surprised by an attack. The little one continued to cause chaos in that episode by awakening a swarm of ice spiders, then spent the next getting swallowed whole by a sea monster. Near the end of season 2, Grogu was captured by Moff Gideon and almost blasted to bits until Din managed to jump in front of him and protect him with his own beskar. This is part of the reason why Grogu went off with Luke Skywalker to train in the Force and learn how to defend himself so Din wouldn’t have to risk his life constantly doing so, and it also makes his new beskar chainmail from his adopted father a perfect gift.

Now, reports from Making Star Wars suggest that IG-11 may be returning to protect Grogu once again. The droid’s armored body would serve as a “mech” suit for Grogu, where he would sit inside it and control it while also getting assistance from the droid when needed for extra protection. This would help Din to keep Grogu protected while he goes on to lead Mandalore in battle, as is his new responsibility with the acquisition of the Darksaber. As to whether or not the droid in use is actually IG-11 or just another IG droid is unknown, but crew members are reportedly referring to the suit as IG-11. The report goes on to mention that if the Jawas showed up to Gideon’s crashed TIE fighter so quickly in the season 1 finale, they could’ve gotten to IG-11’s strewn parts with the same amount of efficiency.

This would be a great chance to elevate the stakes for what’s to come in The Mandalorian season 3. Due to his nature of being a small child with a repressed use of the Force, viewers haven’t gotten to see Grogu in full battle mode. While he’s certainly helped Din in fights to keep his father safe, such as putting the rancor to sleep in the finale of The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu hasn’t been able to show his full set of skills just yet. Getting to fight alongside Din as his father leads Mandalore into battle would set up for an incredible scene, especially one that would make Din’s and Grogu’s quick reunion in Boba Fett very well worth it.

The use of IG-11 as protection for Grogu would also continue to round out Din’s character growth. Due to his own traumatic experiences as a child, Din has been extremely distrustful of droids. The audience has gotten to see how that’s changed thanks to droids like IG-11 and even little BD-1 in The Book of Boba Fett. Choosing to let Grogu immerse himself in a droid suit would be a huge step in Din’s growth. It’s no secret that Din is extremely protective of his foundling, and with droids being one of his only fears in the galaxy, it would mean a lot for Din to trust a droid enough to let it protect his son in this way. Whether or not this is exactly what happens for Grogu and Din, The Mandalorian season 3 is shaping up to be an epic addition to Din’s growing saga.
