Wedded from 1950-1951

Taylor was 18 and Hilton was 24 when they tied the knot. He was the heir to Hilton hotels and Taylor was eager to marry young, as she was brought up with puritanical beliefs. MGM organised the wedding. However, Liz realised that she made a mistake marrying the abusive and alcoholic Hilton heir within a few weeks. They divorced eight months later. After his death in 1969, Hilton’s stepmother and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor claimed that Hilton and she had an affair in 1944, when he was 18.

Taylor married the British actor in a low-key ceremony in February 1952. He was 20 years her senior and the couple had two sons together, Michael Howard and Christopher Edward. In 1955, whi le Taylor was away filming Giant it was reported that Wilding booked the services of strippers at his home. The couple divorced in 1957. Wilding suffered from epilepsy and died from injuries in a fall during an epileptic seizure in 1979.

The couple married in Mexico in February 1957, when Taylor was pregnant with their child. Todd enjoyed the media at tention their marriage received. In June 1957, he threw a lavish birthday party at Madison Square Garden, which was broadcast on television and was attended by 18,000 people. However, within a year of their wedding, Todd died in a plane crash, which reportedly left Taylor half-crazed with grief.

Fisher was a singer and was Taylor’s late husband, Michael Todd’s, best friend. It is speculated that the couple began an affair during the tumultuous time after Todd’s sudden demise. Fisher was then married to actress Debbie Reynolds and the media labelled Taylor a ‘home wrecker’. In subsequent interviews, Taylor said she married Fisher only due to grief over Todd’s death. Reynolds and Taylor were friends since their teens and Reynolds was Taylor’s matron of honour at her wedding to Todd.

Welsh actor Burton is often described as the love of Taylor’s life. He was her fifth husband, but they married twice. They began an affair on the sets of Cleopatra in Italy, when both were still married to other people. ‘Liz and Dick’, as they were known by the paparazzi, were caught on a yacht in Ischia, which resulted in the couple being condemned for erotic vagrancy by the Vatican. Taylor married Burton nine days after divorcing Fisher. They co-starred in numerous films and Burton also gifted Taylor a $1 million diamond necklace. They tried making their marriage work the second time around, but it didn’t last due to Taylor’s alcoholism and Burton’s infidelity.

Taylor’s sixth husband was politician John Warner. They had a whirlwind romance, and were married within five months of their first date. Taylor helped Warner’s electoral campaign but soon got bored with their life in Washington DC. It was reported that due to boredom, Taylor’s alcoholism and dependency on drugs spiralled out of control. They divorced in 1982.

He is the most anonymous of Taylor’s husbands. Fortensky was a construction worker and the two met in rehab. The couple married at Taylor’s close friend Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and sold the wedding pictures to a magazine for $1 million. Taylor used this money to kickstart her AIDS foundation. Though the couple divorced in 1996, they stayed in touch until Taylor’s death in 2011.
