Star Wars: 10 Things Fans Want To See In A Luke Skywalker Series, According To Reddit

Should Luke Skywalker get his own series after The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett? Fans take to Reddit to share what they would want to see.

After a surprise cameo in The Mandalorian’s second season and almost an entire episode centered around him in The Book of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker has emerged as a front runner for his own stand-alone series. With Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, and Andor all featuring the exploits of specific characters coming to Disney+, it only seems natural that a Luke Skywalker series would be imminent.

Star Wars fans have taken to Reddit to voice exactly what they want to see from the continuing adventures of Luke Skywalker, especially if they take place directly after the events of Return of the Jedi. From searching the galaxy for students to rebuild the Jedi Order to seeing Sebastian Stan step into the iconic role and perhaps even an animated iteration, Redditors have many strong opinions about what a Luke Skywalker series should look like.

The Search For Force-Sensitive Beings In The Galaxy

One of the biggest concerns for fans is what shape a Luke Skywalker series would take. Would it be episodic like The Mandalorian or more serialized like The Book of Boba Fett? When it comes to a series centered on Luke Skywalker building up a Jedi Academy, the answer seems simple.

National_Egg_9044 wants, “a series where every episode is Luke flying around investigating reports of Jedi or force-sensitive beings.” Considering that Grogu ended up declining to be Luke’s first student, it only makes sense to create a Luke Skywalker series focused on his search for other potentials, with new species and new planets contributing to the world-building of the franchise.

Sebastian Stan As Luke Skywalker

For the last several years, there’s been one actor’s name on the lips of fans hoping to see a Luke Skywalker series come to fruition; Sebastian Stan. Most often associated with playing Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier in the MCU, Stan has been at the top of fan-casting lists for his remarkable resemblance to the original Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill.

P4rc0pr3s1s is “absolutely convinced we need a Luke Skywalker series featuring Sebastian Stan as a dark, brooding Luke after the Jedi Academy falls.” Given the more cynical Luke Skywalker presented in the Sequel Trilogy, showing how Luke grappled with the dark side present in Ben Solo (and perhaps even himself) would provide better context for his self-imposed isolation on Ahch-To and generate more appreciation for his Sequel Trilogy depiction.

Seeing Luke Become The Most Powerful Jedi In History

Most fans have felt, for some time, that one of the most egregious things about the Original Trilogy coming to an end was not getting to see Luke Skywalker’s true potential as one of the greatest Jedi in the galaxy. Though he suffered from a lack of formal training, his resourcefulness and raw talent coupled with his incredible lineage nevertheless made him a truly formidable Jedi Master by the time the Empire fell.

Redditor No-Feed-6298 thinks, “Watching him rebuild the Jedi order and become the most powerful Jedi in history would be awesome.” There’s a reason that Luke Skywalker has the reputation for being a formidable Jedi, and it only makes sense that fans would want to see what warrants it, similar to the treatment Boba Fett received in The Book of Boba Fett.

An Animated Version

Some fans have been vocal about their dislike of recasting characters like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, feeling that any live-action treatment dishonors the legacy of the original actors who portrayed them. They’re therefore much more inclined to support an animated Luke Skywalker series, especially since it could be voiced by Mark Hamill who, along with being known for the role of Luke Skywalker has an extensive pedigree in voice acting.

RebelScum414 “100% would want animation over live-action,” and Kalse1229 agrees, noting, “My dream is an animated series set a few years after ROTJ, where the OT heroes form a team performing undercover missions for the New Republic.” Since the Sequel Trilogy never included scenes with Han, Leia, and Luke all together, this would be a wonderful way to accomplish this, while expanding the lore of the New Republic.

Including Mara Jade

While several characters from Star Wars Legends have been made canon thanks to recent live-action series (i.e., Grand Admiral Thrawn), there is one notable exception; Mara Jade, the Emperor’s Hand, and Luke Skywalker’s girlfriend. Fans have been clamoring to see Mara Jade cast in a live-action series for some time.

For a Luke Skywalker series, Night-Monkey15 wants Mara Jade to be the antagonist she was in Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy, “a secret apprentice to the emperor, [that] not even Vader knew.” Keeping Zahn’s version of Jade would present some fascinating dramatic tension for a Luke Skywalker series, plus perhaps introduce a romantic angle Luke is rarely associated with.

Searching For Ancient Jedi Artifacts

According to the Sequel Trilogy, Luke Skywalker was safeguarding the ancient Jedi texts so that no one else could be astray by their teachings. His reasoning for the initial procurement of Jedi documentation wasn’t always so jaded however; he wanted to use the Jedi knowledge he found to train pupils, and fans want to see what that process looked like.

PaulCopMallCop wants to see “Luke searching the galaxy for the sacred texts and Jedi artifacts” while possibly being “led by Anakin, Yoda, [and] Obi-Wan.” Not only would this option provide a great opportunity to introduce more planets and expand the Jedi lore, it would also present a means to bring back well-known Force ghosts and fill in some contextual gaps in the Sequel Trilogy.

Including Legends Material

Star Wars Legends continued the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo after the events of the Original Trilogy, and for years, fans have been watching tidbits from the immense back catalog of comics, novels, and video games trickle into the canon at a Bantha’s pace.

Theesm hopes “for Mara being introduced with Thrawn, just like in Legends”, because “losing her (and maybe a son) could also explain why [Luke] gave up.” A significant personal loss, such as a family of his own, would definitely give more credibility to the jaded Jedi Master Luke becomes in the Sequel Trilogy. They go on to say, “I’d also love to see Kyle Katarn and him building his academy.” A popular light sider from Legends, Kyle Katarn is another character fans have been longing to see in live-action, and a Luke Skywalker series might provide the right format.

Kicking Ass

Jedi abilities fluctuate in canon depending on the narrative, but nowhere as radically as for the over-powered Force users in Star Wars Legends. After the Empire fell, Luke Skywalker only improved his Force abilities, eventually becoming capable of feats once only reserved for Master Yoda, and many fans want to see that.

Bellagoat just wants, “at some point to see Luke go full-on “force blasting lightsaber slinging master Jedi.” The EU raised my hopes for it, and it never came to the screen.” Luckily, fans got a taste of this type of Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian’s second season, but clearly, they have the appetite for more.

No CGI

The two versions of Luke Skywalker that have been seen in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett have both been met with varying levels of criticism from fans who feel they veer too close to the uncanny valley. Fans don’t want a Luke Skywalker series comprised of a body double, deep fake technology, and an AI voice program that approximates Mark Hamill’s voice at 25 years old.

ElsebetSteinen would “rather have an actor that looks nothing like Mark Hamill than a weird CGI one.” While no doubt Disney would search for an actor who matched Hamill’s physicality and appearance for a Luke Skywalker series, just having a real actor present would help alleviate some of the fans’ reservations.

De-Aged Mark Hamill

Some fans think the technology is available to effectively make a Luke Skywalker series possible with de-aged original actor Mark Hamill. They believe that deep fake technology and CGI are getting so good that it will be able to accurately show Luke in his prime with Mark being involved.

Thenajsays thinks “Lucasfilms de-aging/CG tech is about to make a huge leap forward.” Bulldog482 agrees and asserts “for the purpose of innovating the technology even more, as Star Wars has always done, Lucasfilm should keep having ILM de-age their actors when they can.” Just like with the 40 foot LED walls being used on The Mandalorian set, it’s appropriate that any new Star Wars series utilize new technology, especially in regards to one of the most recognizable faces in the franchise.
