“The Three Stooges” hits theaters today. The big-screen version of the slapstick TV show has received mostly negative reviews citing its inability to translate the vaudeville humor to modern audiences.
The film, written and directed by the Farrelly brothers, follows Larry, Moe and Curly (Sean Hayes, Chris Diamantopoulos, Will Sasso, respectively ) from being dropped on a nun’s doorstep where they get up to their signature of eye-poking and nyuk-nyuking. Later in life, the gang gets involved in a murder plot and end up starring in a reality TV show.
“Even by Stooges standards, it’s overly juvenile and totally dumb. What I didn’t expect was for it to be so dated and out of touch with what modern audiences find funny,” said the movie critic for the Washington Post.
The New York Post critic agreed saying, “You would think that after a quarter-century in development at four different studios, somebody would have figured out how to make a funny movie about the Three Stooges.”
But not all of the critics agreed, Entertainment Weekly said, “It’s an enchantingly well-done tribute that revives, and even refreshes, our affection for the Stooges, yet at its core it lacks the completely and totally unhinged shock of the new.”
So far, the film has received a 45percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
