The Truth About Alec Baldwin And Woody Allen’s Relationship

During the 'Rust' tragedy, Alec Baldwin was caught relying on an old friend who isn't the biggest fan favorite, Woody Allen.

There’s no doubt that Alec Baldwin is going through the toughest time in his life. That’s not in any way to diminish the unimaginable struggles of the surviving family of the late-Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who lost her life on the set of Rust. While Alec claims to not be responsible for Halyna’s passing, he is the one that was holding the gun that took her life. And there’s no doubt that the press has closed in around him as he struggles to comprehend and cope with the unspeakable tragedy that he’s entangled in. Alec has mostly been laying low with his family but has also confronted the press in an “intense” and “raw” interview as well as allowed himself to socialize with some of his famous friends… including controversial director Woody Allen.

During challenging times, it’s typical that people surround themselves with friends, which is probably why Alec was just spotted outside of Woody Allen’s Upper East Side townhouse. But given how controversial the Annie Hall and Midnight In Paris director has become, some may find it a little odd that Alec would choose to spend time with him while in the midst of a firestorm of scandal and pain. While a publicist may have suggested otherwise, Alec clearly doesn’t care. After all, he’s stood by his friend and frequent collaborator and isn’t afraid for the world to know it. Here’s what we know about Alec and Woody’s relationship.

Alec Baldwin Doesn’t Regret Making Movies With Woody Allen

Alec Baldwin does not appear to be one of the actors who regret working with Woody Allen. In fact, according to a 2018 article by The Guardian, Alec has denounced stars who have criticized working with Woody. In fact, he called them “unfair and sad”. Among those he criticized are Greta Gerwig, Elliot Page, Timothee Chalamet, Mira Sorvino, and Rebecca Hall. While all of these celebrities (and more) have suddenly denounced Woody Allen after years of scandal due to the arrival of the #MeToo Movement, Alec believes the accusations leveled against him years prior to the movement have been settled in court.

“Woody Allen was investigated forensically by two states (NY and CT) and no charges were filed,” Alec Baldwin tweeted in 2018 after making both Blue Jasmine, Alice, and To Rome With Love with Woody. “The renunciation of him and his work, no doubt, has some purpose. But it’s unfair and sad to me. I worked w WA 3 times and it was one of the privileges of my career.”

Alec continued to defend Woody on Twitter by tweeting, “Is it possible to support survivors of pdophilia and sxual assault/abuse and also believe that WA is innocent? I think so. The intention is not to dismiss or ignore such complaints. But accusing ppl of such crimes should be treated carefully. On behalf of the victims, as well.”

Of course, the cases that Woody Allen has been entangled in are nothing short of complicated with some of his children taking his side and others siding with his ex, Mia Farrow, and the alleged victim Dylan Farrow. But this is something Alec must be used to be now since even some of his friends, such as Howard Stern, have the opposite opinion of Woody Allen that he has.

Alec Baldwin Wants To Stand By His Friend Woody Allen

Alec Baldwin isn’t the only celebrity who defends Woody Allen. The director’s ex and Annie Hall co-star Diane Keaton remains a supporter as does Curb Your Enthusiasm star, Larry David. Even after the HBO documentary, Allen V Farrow was released in 2021, Alec again came to his friend and colleague’s defense despite more and more pressure to do the opposite.

“I’m not defending someone who is guilty of something. I’m choosing to defend someone who has not been proven guilty of something,” Alec said in a 14-minute video according to NME. Alec later went on Instagram and railed against cancel culture in general.

Alec has also admitted that he wanted to support his friends. In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “It’s a normal inclination to want to rally by your friends up until the point that they are convicted of something. If they’re convicted of a crime, well then you’re sad, and that’s tragic, but they’ve got to go through that process.”

Given that Alec was recently spotted visiting Woody with their wives during the terrible scandal he’s currently involved with, this 2018 quote really helps put the truth of their relationship into perspective. Who else would Alec want to spend time with during a time of crisis than someone he knows has been through something similar? Regardless of the facts of each of their situations, the two of them have been there for each other. They’re friends. They’re colleagues. And if the world criticizes them for it, so be it.
