Alan Alda is famous for his role as Hawkeye Pierce on the classic television comedy series, MAS*H. The series lasted 11 seasons and Alda received numerous awards for his work on it, including Directors Guild of America Awards, Emmy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards.
Last year, the 83-year-old actor revealed he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Find out how the actor, director, and author is coping with the illness and what his net worth is.
Alda has been busier than ever
Alda appeared on the Today show and spoke of his busy schedule despite his illness. “I work so hard. But I guess that’s part of it. I feel like a kid because I’m working so hard,” said the actor, who stars in the film Marriage Story to be released next month.
Alda’s colleagues have even taken to calling him “the world’s oldest millennial.”
“That’s what they call me at my office because I’m very into computers and social stuff, you know,” said Alda, who hosts his Clear+Vivid podcast. “And my podcast. I’m very happy with all that stuff.”
In January this year, Alda told People that he’s happy going at his hard-working pace. “I’m busy,” said Alda, who was honored with the 2019 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. “I do occasionally do nothing and sit around. But I believe in doing everything in moderation, including moderation. So far it’s working.”
His Parkinson’s disease diagnosis
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder afflicting approximately ten million people worldwide. The illness is not fatal and it is possible to live a normal life, as in Alda’s case.
The actor revealed his diagnosis last year. He told CBS News at the time that he had actually been diagnosed in 2015. The author felt compelled to talk about his medical situation only because he knew it would eventually become public knowledge. Alda reassured viewers that he was doing very well.
“I’ve had a full life since then,” he said. “I’ve acted, I’ve given talks, I help at the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook. I started this new podcast.”
Alda spoke with the Today show last week telling the hosts he has been keeping active to slow down the progress of the disease, and has been boxing, juggling, playing tennis, swimming, bike riding, and marching.
“I’m good. I shake a little, but I’m good. I work out. You can hold back the progress (of the disease) if you do a lot of specific exercises, so I do a lot of crazy things.”
“I march to Sousa music,” he stated, referring to composer John Philip Sousa. “Lotta Sousa music going on all the time in my house.”
Alda’s net worth
Alda’s net worth is $40 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and since opening up about his diagnosis, his projects are increasing.
In July of 2018, he began hosting his Clear + Vivid podcast, which has welcomed over 50 influencers from entertainment, science, business, music, academia, literature and politics, including actress and comedienne Carol Burnett, author Isabel Allende, and philanthropist Melinda Gates.
In addition, the actor recently appeared in the film Marriage Story with Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Laura Dern, and Ray Liotta. The movie premiered at the Venice Film Festival this past August, and will be in theaters next month, followed by digital streaming in December on Netflix.
“I really have never made plans for the future,” Alda said in his conversation with Today last week. “My life is more of an improvisation. I just try to make the best of what’s in front of me.”
