The Sopranos Creator Is Developing His First TV Show In 15 Years

The HBO drama, which followed the late James Gandolfini as the angst-ridden mob boss Tony Soprano, is widely considered one of the greatest television shows of all time and is frequently credited with ushering in the Golden Age of Television. Since The Sopranos ended in 2007, its creator and showrunner David Chase pivoted to feature film, including working on The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark.
Now, Chase is returning to television for the first time since The Sopranos ended. Variety reports that Chase is teaming up with Hannah Fidell, known for A Teacher, to develop a new show for FX which has already been given a pilot commitment. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the untitled series is based on one of Chase’s previously unproduced scripts that Fidell has written a contemporary take on, according to FX. Chase and Fidell are both credited as co-creators, co-writers, and executive producers.
What Has The Sopranos Creator Been Up To?
Since The Sopranos came to a famously controversial cut-to-black ending in 2007, Chase has worked on two feature films. In 2012, he made his feature directorial debut with Not Fade Away, a passion project centered on the lead singer of a teenage rock ‘n’ roll band during the 1960s. Chase recently co-wrote and produced The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, a film that he wanted to direct but was unable to after suffering a heart attack.
For Chase’s highly-anticipated return to television, he has teamed with a talented collaborator. Fidell made her feature directorial debut in 2013 with the Sundance film, A Teacher, which she subsequently adapted into the FX/Hulu limited series of the same name. Chase is responsible for masterminding one of the greatest television shows in history, and now that he’s making his return with a new television series 15 years after The Sopranos, the project should be paid proper attention.
