Will Walter White & Jesse Pinkman Appear In Better Call Saul Season 5?

Better Call Saul season 5 takes the prequel ever closer to the timeline of Breaking Bad, so could Walter White and Jesse Pinkman finally appear?

With more familiar faces from Breaking Bad joining Better Call Saul for season 5, what are the chances that Walt and Jesse will make a surprise cameo? Debuting as a Breaking Bad spinoff and prequel, Better Call Saul was initially careful to build its own world and craft its own success, but with the series now considered more or less on par with its predecessor in terms of quality, Vince Gilligan has introduced more characters the audience know and love. Gus Fring returned to act as one of the main antagonists in season 3 onward, while season 5 will feature the Better Call Saul debut of Dean Norris as Hank Schrader.

Season upon season, Better Call Saul inches closer towards joining up with Breaking Bad, and that’s even truer now that Jimmy will officially be operating as “Saul Goodman” on a full-time basis in season 5. But while the spinoff has very much been Jimmy’s story, fans have often wondered whether Breaking Bad‘s main duo of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman might one day feature. That reality is now more likely than ever, since the duo were recently on-set together for the filming of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, allowing them to maybe film some material for Better Call Saul on the quiet.

There’s a case for both Jesse and Walt appearing in Better Call Saul season 5. Bryan Cranston’s job as a chemistry teacher keeps him away from the drugs trade for now, but 2 potential points of entry present themselves, and the most obvious is via Hank. So long as Walt’s brother-in-law has a role in Better Call Saul‘s fifth season, Walt himself could briefly appear, depending on how much focus is placed on Hank. The second eventuality is Walt appearing in Better Call Saul‘s future timeline, where Jimmy is masquerading as Gene. This end of the Breaking Bad timeline is deliberately vague at present, meaning the Gene story could fit either before or after Walt’s death.

Bryan Cranston as Walter White and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman El Camino

Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman would be far easier to integrate. Jesse is already dealing drugs when Breaking Bad begins, and with Hank now sniffing around alongside his DEA colleagues, Jesse could turn up as a street-level dealer. In Breaking Bad‘s first episode, Jesse is busted by Hank, so it makes sense that the Schrader and Gomez team might be chasing Pinkman down in Better Call Saul. Via Krazy-8, Jesse also has certain connections with the Salamanca family. Jimmy will have a more formal relationship with these criminals in Better Call Saul season 5, so his path might briefly collide with Jesse’s.

With that said, Breaking Bad fans perhaps shouldn’t set their hearts on seeing Walt and Jesse in Better Call Saul just yet. The spinoff has slowly but steadily added legacy characters to its cast, and cameos from Cranston and/or Paul would be the pinnacle of that, leaving nowhere else to go. Accordingly, it makes more sense for Breaking Bad‘s two leads to appear in Better Call Saul‘s final sixth season, rather than 2020’s run. This would also offer a more natural entry point, especially for Walt, and would help bring the series to a fittingly massive finale.

While the El Camino movie would’ve offered an ideal chance to film Walt and Jesse cameos for Better Call Saul in secrecy, the movie’s release simultaneously makes their appearances less likely. Prior to the film’s premiere on Netflix, Breaking Bad fans were feverishly speculating whether Cranston would reprise his most famous role alongside Jesse, and that wish was paid off in a short but meaningful scene that reunited the iconic TV duo. Since the Walt and Jesse payoff moment came in El Camino, it’s unlikely that Better Call Saul will repeat the same trick so soon.
