A new Yellowstone and 1883 spinoff entitled 1932 is officially happening at Paramount+ following the success of the latter spin-off series. The neo-Western drama franchise first launched in 2018 with the Paramount Network series centered on the Dutton family, the owners of the largest ranch in Montana as they deal with internal conflicts as well as those with the bordering Broken Rock Indian Reservation, national parks and developers. Kevin Costner leads the cast of Yellowstone alongside Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille and Breckin Merrill.

Though initially launching to mixed reviews from critics, Yellowstone has grown to receive largely positive reviews in its subsequent seasons and has been a ratings smash for Paramount Network. This success initially led to the proper Western spin-off series 1883 centered on an early generation of the Dutton family as they make the trip from Fort Worth, Texas to Montana to what would eventually become the family ranch. Starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Sam Elliott, 1883 has similarly been a major hit for Paramount+, scoring largely positive reviews from critics and drawing in large viewership for the streaming platform and the franchise is only just getting started.

During this week’s ViacomCBS investor event, Paramount+ revealed it has officially ordered a new Yellowstone and 1883 spin-off series entitled 1932. The new chapter in the neo-Western franchise will once again explore a new generation of Duttons, only this time set during the era of western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression. Tanya Giles, chief programming officer of ViacomCBS Streaming, wrote about 1932 in the following statement.

“The incredible storytelling and stellar performances behind 1883 have fueled phenomenal new records for Paramount+. Promoting the series through linear sampling on the Paramount Network during their latest record-breaking season of ‘Yellowstone’ further enabled us to introduce Sheridan’s loyal audience to this fantastic new series. We look forward to bringing fans even more of the Duttons’ origin story.”

News of the new spin-off series comes on the heels of the Yellowstone franchise appearing in a number of headlines for ViacomCBS, soon to be renamed Paramount. With the mainline series breaking multiple viewership records throughout its run, including its season 4 premiere being the highest-rated episode for any cable series since a 2017 episode of The Walking Dead, plans for Paramount Network to be rebranded to the Paramount Movie Network were scrapped. Additionally, Yellowstone was recently renewed for season 5 with filming reportedly set to get underway in May.

Alongside Yellowstone, the first spin-off 1883 has proven to be an equally successful venture for ViacomCBS, setting the record for the highest-rated cable series premiere in six years with its Paramount Network airing and sitting as Paramount+’s most-watched title ever ahead of fellow Taylor Sheridan series Mayor of Kingstown. Both series also recently earned season 2 renewals from the streaming platform to be produced under his overall deal with the studio. While audiences await word on 1932, they can catch up with Yellowstone streaming on Peacock and 1883 streaming on Paramount+ now.
