How to Watch Downton Abbey: A New Era – Is the Sequel Film Streaming?

Downton Abbey: A New Era is just about ready to make its theatrical debut in the United States, but will fans be able to stream the sequel film?

It’s almost time for Downton Abbey fans to reunite with their favorite characters in the upcoming sequel film Downton Abbey: A New Era. The popular British period drama ran for six seasons on PBS until 2015. Downton Abbey received its first follow-up film in 2019, and after several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sequel is finally on its way.

The first Downton Abbey film was released exclusively in theaters on Sept. 20, 2019, but was eventually made available to stream on Peacock. Since the Downton Abbey series will leave Netflix on May 31, fans continue to wonder where to watch the highly anticipated sequel other than in theaters. Let’s discuss what fans can expect plot-wise and how they can watch Downton Abbey: A New Era.

What Is Downton Abbey: A New Era About?

It’s been three long years since fans have seen the Downton Abbey cast together on-screen. Since the previous film involved a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary, what shenanigans will the Granthams and their staff get themselves into next? While the original Downton Abbey film revealed Lady Violet’s terminal illness diagnosis, she appears alive and well in the trailers for Downton Abbey: A New Era. Much of the storyline of the sequel will include Lady Violet and her past romantic life, which leads to her acquisition of a villa in the south of France.

The Granthams are incredibly confused about the Dowager’s previous lover since this is the first time they’ve heard of her having a relationship before Lord Grantham’s father. The trip to France to discover Lady Violet’s past won’t be the only fresh and exciting plot point in the Downton Abbey sequel. The latest trailer also featured a few new faces arriving at Downton. One of them was Jack Barber (Hugh Dancy) — a Hollywood film director. Mr. Barber also arrived with two actors in hopes of creating a film at Downton.

Mr. Barber’s aspirations are met with resistance from Lord Grantham, but Lady Mary seems to be on board. She is shown assisting during the production at Downton. Mr. Barber and Lady Mary may be getting a little too close, as the trailer depicts a potential intimate conversation about marriage between the two. Lady Mary’s husband, Henry (Matthew Goode), will also not appear in Downton Abbey: A New Era after his brief cameo in the first film. It is currently unclear how the film will address his absence. Contrastingly, Tom and Lucy are shown at their wedding, while Daisy and Andy get married before the sequel begins.

How to Watch Downton Abbey: A New Era

Downton Abbey: A New Era will be released exclusively in theaters on May 20. However, for those who prefer to avoid the theater crowds, the sequel will likely follow the original film’s lead and be released on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service). After traversing a few streaming platforms, the first film landed on Peacock, and if all goes to plan, Downton Abbey: A New Era will premiere on Peacock on July 4. How fitting for a British film.
