Mandalorian Season 2 Art Reveals Early Design For Michael Biehn’s Lang
A new piece of Star Wars concept art shows an early design for Michael Biehn’s hired gun in season 2 of Disney+'s The Mandalorian.
A new piece of concept art for The Mandalorian season 2 shows an early design for Michael Biehn’s Lang. Biehn appeared in a plethora of iconic action movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s, playing Sgt. Kyle Reese in The Terminator (1984), Cpl. Dwayne Hicks in Aliens (1986), and Lt. Coffey in The Abyss (1989). More recently, he starred as Sheriff Hague in Planet Terror and Chris Larabee in the TV remake of The Magnificent Seven. In Disney+’s The Mandalorian, Biehn plays the gunman Lang, who has the unfortunate task of facing off against Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).
In The Mandalorian “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” Din and Grogu travel to the forest planet of Corvus in search of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who is having problems with the cruel magistrate Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), and her Captain of the Guard, Lang. Naturally, Din finds himself at the center of this conflict. During Ahsoka’s showdown with the magistrate, Din and Lang have a duel. That said, both characters sport armor worthy of the West. However, unlike Mando, Lang lacks a helmet.
Lucasfilm character designer Brian Matyas recently shared some early concept art for Lang in The Mandalorian season 2. The piece sees the hired gun wearing a helmet and respirator gear that were omitted from the final design. Check it out below:
Suffice to say, the more casual look used in The Mandalorian worked as a subtle contrast to Din and probably allowed for a better performance from Biehn. Although his tenure on the series was short (thanks to Din), Biehn’s part on The Mandalorian was a memorable one—which clearly meant a lot to Dawson in her Star Wars debut. That said, Biehn’s Star Wars role is just one of many exciting celebrity cameos in a series that pays homage to Westerns and movies of old, with Timothy Olyphant’s Cobb Vanth being another example of a veteran gunslinger.
The Mandalorian season 2 episode 5 ends with Ahsoka defeating the magistrate and getting the information she needed regarding the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn and, presumably, Ezra Bridger. After reprising her role in The Book of Boba Fett, Dawson will headline her own Disney+ series, Star Wars: Ahsoka. Furthermore, Din and Grogu have reunited for The Mandalorian season 3, which should see the pair head to Mandalore—where Din will seek atonement for removing his helmet. They’ll also undoubtedly encounter more than a few amoral baddies who Mando will have to put down when The Mandalorian season 3 premieres later this year on Disney+.
