Matt Smith Smolders as the Dragons Arrive in Game of Thrones’ Prequel Trailer

HBO drops a new teaser trailer for the upcoming fantasy prequel series, House of the Dragon, set hundreds of years prior to Game of Thrones.

After months without news, HBO recently dropped a new teaser for House of the Dragon, featuring a smoldering Matt Smith.

The clip teases audiences with a more ancient Westeros than Game of Thrones fans may be familiar with, dragons and the Targaryen dynasty, all accompanied by a voice over stating the importance of legacy. While few details are given about the plot and intrigue itself, there are hints of infighting and, most importantly, the arrival of the series’ dragons.

The upcoming prequel series, based on author George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, entered development around 2018, with HBO giving the show a straight-to-series order in late 2019. The first season will consist of 10 episodes, with future seasons currently uncertain. House of the Dragon was one of several prospective projects explored following the conclusion of Game of Thrones.

Martin previously teased audiences with the show to come when filming wrapped. He wrote on his blog, “The writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to [Ryan J. Condal] and [Miguel Sapochnik] and their team, and to our amazing cast.”

House of the Dragon takes place 200 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, adapting the encyclopaedic Fire & Blood, which details the rise and fall of House Targaryen and the extinction of dragons. Co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik previously explained, “House of the Dragon has its own tone that will evolve and emerge over the course of the show. But first, it’s very important to pay respects and homage to the original series, which was pretty groundbreaking.”

The show features a star-studded cast, with Paddy Considine playing King Viserys, Emma D’Arcy playing Princess Rhaenyra and Matt Smith portraying Prince Daemon Targaryen, the king’s younger brother. Rhys Ifans is also starring in the show as Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, with Olivia Cooke playing Ser Otto’s daughter, Lady Alicent. In addition, Steve Toussaint has been cast as Lord Corlys Velaryon, the head of House Velaryon; and Eve Best as Lord Corlys’ wife and King Viserys’ cousin, Princess Rhaenys Velaryon. Finally, Sonoya Mizuno and Fabien Frankel will play Mysaria and Ser Criston Cole, respectively.
